Long standing football clubs have gone to the wall for the want of 2 or 3 days of his wages.

The world most wanted man, Bin Laden, was deemed worth less than a third of Wayne Rooney.

It's just got to be bollocks.

Maybe it's just me but I think there just comes a point where it's pure greed.

Whenever there's an appeal on the TV for cancer research or for starving Africans I usually shout at the telly, " Ask Paul McCartney, when I'm a quid behind that greedy t**t I'll dip in my pocket"

Bit daft really because I pay into cancer research every month.

Anyway, I'm changing McCartney for Rooney.

Should everybody's wages be decided by the market or by a people's democratic committee?

I'm not sure which market decided that wage, but given they need to replace a lot of other players, they've set the bar at a ridiculous height.

They need two decent centre halves for a start.

Hummels would cost around £40 to £50 million and would demand around £200,00 a week I'd have thought.

They'd have been better off spending the money on him IMO.

When you consider Mata can play the ten role it looks like utter madness.

I agree people with that kind of money should do something useful with it. Many of them do (I believe the England team waive all appearance money for charity) and others will do so in their own private way. There will also be some who are greedy and keep it all to themselves. Isn't that the same as in any other walk of life though? There'll be plenty of people on your salary who don't pay into cancer research or any other charity.

But what they do with the money is a separate matter. If they make money for their clubs, there's nothing greedy in them receiving the share of it they deserve.

Haven't they been playing Rooney on the left of the 3 behind RvP recently? If so, £300k for a player that can't even make the team in his preferred position.

    It's about opinions.

Mine is that there comes a time when greed takes over.

And Rooney is a greedy little pig faced bin dipper.

It was the western Europe footballer market.
I doubt Manchester United decided to offer him £300k per week if he could only get £100k per week elsewhere.

I'd be interested to know who would really pay him £300k a week after they've lumped on for the transfer. I've some chocolate teapots to sell.

This I do agree with. I don't think he's worth it in footballing terms, even though I do defend the idea of footballers getting the money they earn for their clubs.

His agent would be talking about a contract starting in summer 2015 when there wouldn't be a transfer fee involved. He would stay on £250k per week until then and then get a lot more than £300k per week.

i dont for one second blame Rooney in his 300k a week deal . The issue is what the club values him at and what escalations will be needed for clubs to improve their squads.

Lets face it the Premier league has fallen sharply in stock since 2010 , there are just too many "top" clubs to fit into the champions league places in England ,
these days choosing ANY of the top six is risky if you want to be certain of playing CL football . There is almost no artistry in the prem , there are few exciting players
and on the England front we are looking in quite a bad shape considering the golden age of the English footballer (the last decade) passed by without anything to shout about.

Rooney isn't worth £300k, we all know it and Man Utd know it too.

The thing is, United are crumbling at the moment, and can't be seen to lose such an asset at this time.

United's poor position and desperation has seen them lose all bargaining power in this. I suspect the brief was, along the lines of 'Pay him whatever it takes to stop him leaving'.

    A bit desperate really.

Also, perhaps it's a minor victory and somewhat of a coup for David Moyes.

Gives him the perfect opportunity to tell the world what a great relationship he has with 'Wazza'. This is important to him and United considering their uncomfortable past, and the fans needed to see it.

It's all politics. I saw on the news last night the clip of Wayne from MUTV saying "I've got a really good relationship with David Moyes" etc, it's a huge financial outlay to make a point that a) United are still big and b) Rooney is happy with the new manager, so he must be good.

When thinking about wages of a footballer you also need to think about the length of their career and possible injuries. You have a maximum of about 20 years where you will only earn a serious amount for 10 of them. Then if you are injured seriously you can lose your chance of a career. In what other profession do you spend your entire life working at doing something that can be taken away so easily and lasts for a relatively short period of time? Obviously for someone like Rooney this kind of stuff wouldn't matter but look at someone like Aluko. If his problems keep coming back he will have to quit football and he will probably not have that much money saved up so will have to completely change careers.

Also, if you complain about the wages footballers receive yet pay £40 a month to sky then you have no basis for complaint. YOU are the reason they get so much money.

PSG and Chelsea were after him. They'd easily pay that.

I doubt it personally, I suspect Party's short term internal politics view is nearer the mark. However, I've seen enough to know you post your considered opinion, and I'm posting with a real lack of hard facts or knowledge, so I'll defer to you.
