Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has agreed a new five-and-a-half year contract worth up to £300,000 a week.
The 28-year-old England international will extend his current contract by four years, tying him to the club until June 2019.
His old deal, which would have expired next year, paid up to £250,000 a week.

kinell. I'd take it if it was offered but jesus christ wheres it all going to end. I arent going to do the that would pay for x number of nurses, as its apples and oranges but where is all this money coming from.

Imagine a world in which that would happen…

Players in that kind of earning bracket agreeing to pay yearly wages of two or three nurses/teachers/key workers etc. in their local community for the duration of their contract.

Transfer fees (over certain amounts) between clubs having defined percentiles devoted to helping the well being of that community.

    And so on.

Football could become the people’s game.

    ****ing dreamworld.

Bit OT but is he even that good? He seems to have been less useful than Sturridge for example in the last year. Seems like he's just rated for his name and as a country we won't accept anyone could be better than him.

That is a ridiculous amount of money for that fat overrated Shrek. I hope we play Sturridge at the world cup and not him.

Football just marauds through global financial crises like Ticklers jaw through a pie, no matter it's core temperature.

Thousands could die of winter cold, unable to pay the energy costs. People become more and more reliant on food banks, but football marches on untouched. Wayne casually bullies his ailing club into upping his modest wages to £300k per week without a thought, they need him more than he needs them. If they won't pay it, someone else will.

    How does football do it?

The most overrated player in England in history.

I stipulate in England cos abroad most rate him somewhere around his actual level. None of this of course is his fault - he didnt hype himself or give himself that contract. More fool Man Utd.

I think he has gone from being overrated to being underrated. His footballing intelligence is extremely high (insert intelligence joke here) and he has great ability not only as a front man but as an all round player. There are not many players with; his kind of work rate that could track back and win a ball, run with it and take on players, have an excellent range of passing including some brilliant reverse passes, great technique when striking a ball, and score plenty of goals when in the position to do so. He is a player that can have a huge influence on a game and lift a team that is not playing well.

For the reasons youve stated, Ive always said for me he's more an advanced midfielder and he could be an immediate solution to their perceived ****eness there. His hard running, dynamic physical approach would sit nicely alongside the slower Carrick or Fellaini and the silkier Januzaj and Mata.

    Carrick or Fellaini
    Mata Rooney Januzaj
    Van Persie Wellbeck

But he doesnt want to play in midfield apparently.

To be fair to Rooney, when he plays up front, he scores goals. There aren't many players with such consistent goals/game ratios in the Premier League. Welbeck, on the other hand...

Yeah but Van Persie scores whilst he does the leg work and runs the channels. Have you not noticed that when Sturridge plays, Suarez seems to score far fewer than when Sturridge doesnt play?

He doesn't seem to have the effect that van Persie does for United, and I'd say Mata is a better player too. I know United's biggest problem is hardly Rooney but I am starting to come round to the "he's over-rated" school of thought.

He can have a good work rate but then other times Kieran Richardson strides past him on the counter and his only reaction is to try (and fail) to trip him. He's so unreliable. There's always seems to be something going on with Rooney other than football. He's always being affected by some off field issue or other. He's like the opposite of John Terry, whose form never seemed to dip regardless of how much the media and fans wanted it to.

Rooney is a fantastic player. When somebody has the skill he has and can score goals he has to play up front. He's worth £300k per week easily.

A decent player in two average teams (national & club side).

But he's not worth that. That's ridiculous money.

What's Tom Huddlestone on? £30k/£40k per week? It seems to make sense when you compare the two.
