And the journalists are as bad. I vividly remember someone in the NME covering Morrissey's first gig since the Smiths broke up (Wolverhampton 1988 if memory serves and it was one of the most crass things I've eevr read. It spoke about people outside the civic hall saying "the anguish on their faces and desperation in the air was reminiscent of a picket line during the miners' strike". It wasn't tongue in cheek as in those days criciticsing the smiths or their fan base in that paper would have been enough to get you lynched - and battered to death with 23000 bunches of daffodils.....
