they're paid that because they are worth it. the club decides what to pay a player, not the player himself. it reflects that he's got talent, and he's in a booming industry. supply and demand. its more obscene having players on the fringes of man city and chelsea earning £100k+ for nothing, rather than a player like rooney who is world class and puts in a shift every week. are clubs not allowed to splash the cash they have because there are people in poverty? poor argument there dai. if they dont then as one other pointed out here, they have less money to spend on employees etc, knock-on effect.
There is plenty of truth in that. Rooney's mrs will spend lots of it, thereby helping poor workers who make the products she buys. People often forget that people like Rooney spend money, thereby creating other jobs. Money just circulates around the system. And people like Rooney actually help pay the benefits of societies lazy. If Rooney played for free, the poor would still be poor.
We the fans are just as much to blame. How many were shouting, or are pleased that ML got sacked? Guess how much that decision will cost us as a club, and who do you think are footing the bill, us..... We are just as much to blame for the over inflated prices, as clubs spend whatever they can to survive, yet those same fans that are criticising wages are the same fans that call for players/managers heads as soon as we even have a small chance at relegation. So what gives us the right to really moan about it?
Another excellent point. If Man U didn't pay him 300K, probably another team would, and then the fans would be up in arms because he's left. Some fans want a world class team where players earn £20K a year. LOL. But, if fans do think that players get paid to much, then they should boycott matches and not contribute to it. Plenty of lower league teams to support that pay much lower wages.
i'm assuming those who castigate those who accept offers of high salaries would also be happy, if they sell their house, to accept a lower price because of all the people in poverty and how its obscene blaa blaa blaa that a house costs so much and people are in poverty yada yada...... or not. you buy and sell things for what someone is willing to pay for it. if he wasnt worth it they wouldnt pay it. that figure of £300k probably includes image rights which are earnings the club makes directly from his name and standing in the game (probably englands best player), aswell.
So Dai, If you don't like it stop paying it (the TV money, not the season ticket). I ditched sky last year and the only thing i get through BT is my Broadband and phone terr.. Im not saying a player should not get £300,000 per week as that is their choice but im saying its obscene when people are struggling to make ends meet. I went to see swansea V Arsenal last season and my ticket cost me £62 and even though nobody forced me to buy the ticket does not make it right that clubs only charge that amount because they pay their players an obscene amount of money, The great Ivor alchurch was lucky to take home £40 and that would include a win bonus which was still more than the average working man was taking home in those days, But the minute it was campaigned by the former player and chairman of fulham Jimmy hill that there was to be no limit on what players can earn there was others saying no because football was a working mans game and affordable. Rugby was for the upper classes and free and the no campaign said footballers earned a decent above average wage and a no cap on wages would only lead to increased charge through the turnstiles that could leave some working class families unable to afford to go and remember there were more people going to football matches then than there are today. It not whether anyone is paid £300k,per week its the attitude that it dont effect the fans or other clubs further down the leagues because it does. football has lost its way and not in the real world like we are and it is pricing the working and middle classes away in droves to what it use to be like 15- 20 years ago and 15-20 years ago before that. Football will eventually be just for the rich and that is what it wasn't intended for at the beginning.....football has got too greedy and it will continue as long as people pay their over the top entrance fee's.....
The working man, such as your self Dai, are also the problem with how football is, look at your vendetta against ML, too high expectations is why we are in the situation we are in. Fans will not settle for a season of struggle, they demand more, and as such that costs the club more.
that is why i am no longer going to support the swans with money anymore. Its not an enjoyable pastime anymore its far to serious. Its suppose to be a game for Christ sake not life or death. It's gone far too expensive to take seriously anymore. I dont give a dam if we go down or stay up or end up rich or go into administration anymore.. football is not the same its been taken over by greedy businessmen who bleed the public dry, and for what? to watch a bunch of players that has absolutely no connection with Swansea whatsoever play football for 90 minutes and earn thousands of pounds for doing it. They would not have come here for anything else.....gone are the days when Swansea was made up of local footballers with the odd import from another British club and that was the story of every club. The players who play for Swansea or any other club are not representing you or me anymore they are just there to earn big money and play football. There was nothing better than watching local lads take on the best as you knew they are Swansea players. Its all about foreign players now and who can cost the most and who can earn the most but all they are doing is playing under the Swansea umbrella and are not Swansea at all. Football is ruined and there is no way it will change and i will not pay good money anymore to watch a bunch of foreign players who have nothing to do with me or Swansea in anyway shape or form... Not for that price anyway. I can watch in a pub or in the comfort of my home for free.
I'm surprised by some of your comments Dai given how vocal and passionate you are about everything to do with the Swans. That said, you are one of the few who did get to see the Swans play with mostly local, or at least British talent, so can understand where you are coming from. I started watching in 78, so just before we had our first overseas players in Jimmy and Ante Rajkovic, but I clearly remember Jeremy Charles, Wyndham Evans, Curtis, Marustik etc...we may have only had 2 foreigners, and they were English! It's difficult to stop the trend now, which is a worry, because it will eventually result in much lower attendance and more clubs going down the toilet. As for local talent, well see what the club will do to foster development of youngsters in the area. That's where some of our money should be going, and I'd be ok with that.
I think you've talked some sense there Dai especially post #26 which had paragraph breaks Was it the '68 Celtic team which won the European Cup with players that all came from within 30 miles? Something like that.
I remember going to the Vetch for a fourth division game in the 80s when it was announced the team were all Welsh-born. It was the first time in about thirty years. Awful game. Do you want us to return to that? If you want to watch a team full of local players at a cheap price then their are plenty of League of Wales games about. I watch Aber when I can and (usually) enjoy it.
For those that want local born players, there are plenty of teams in Swansea and most areas of the country where you can see them. Support local teams and grass roots football if that's what you want. It's all the TV money that has made the PL what it is. Take that money away and you're back to lower quality players and teams. But those lower quality players and teams already exist elsewhere. Some on here (especially Dai) seem to want something that's not available. i.e. world class football with players being paid £40 per match. It's just not going to happen.
It's obscene, the only way I can stomach it is that whilst he earns that amount, he also pays an obscene amount of tax each week - probably more tax than I will pay in my lifetime. And whilst I know nurses are drastically underpaid, that the tax paid by Rooney and others hopefully helps fund the NHS in a way that I cannot. BUT - it's still not right.
I think it's more likely to fund bankers than the NHS. Do footballers really pay so much tax though? Surely they must have found ways to pay less.
Rooney for example last season was using a loophole which there are many in football and was only paying £2000/week in tax on a wage of 250.000/week...that is not right which ever way you look at it. Its disgusting..
Anyway i will be off shortly once my two grand kids have finished their supper and put their swans tops on one with Michu on the back and the other with Rangel on his......Me well i have Jinx is god on mine.. only kidding. ...I think we will do well tonight..
if theres a 'loophole' there to be exploited then why not? i would. when you fill in your tax returns you wouldnt pay a penny more than your accountant told you you had to, its the same with footballers, just on a higher level.
