With passing like that could Ilori do better in a holding role than CB?

He is a pacey player.

 

maybe he's just going to be a cb. if i am not allowed judge him on u21 can you judge him on one spanish league game?

 

He seems to have the attributes to be a good CB but he's only young and hardly played any first team football. Loan spell away from limelight is good for him.

Not many defenders are good enough to play at the top level when they are early 20's. He needs a couple of years to develop and then hopefully once he's more experienced he'll be able to slot into our defence.

 

Extremely quick, great passing, good with his head - has solid foundation to be come a classy defender and I do rate him highly. Needs to bulk up though but that will come with time.

 

True about 20 year old CB's. Look at Coates, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. Thrown in early, they made some big errors and it wrecked their confidence.

If a young forward makes an error it can have less consequence then if a young CB makes a mistake.

 

Didn't realise he had such a passing range.

Watching his performance v Betis it seemed like his team were looking to play off long balls from him. Hopefully he has a good finish to the season and can compete with or replace Kolo next year.

 

I want us to buy a proper CDM but maybe he could cover that position too

 

That's a very good shout - he can also play along the back line, such is his versatility. He definitely has a lot of potential.

 

Liverpool may have signed Tiago Ilori as a defender, but his skill-set suggests he could become an effective defensive midfielder with a creative edge.

When Tiago Ilori joined Liverpool from Sporting Lisbon for a reported £7million, he would have known he was in for a fight to secure a place in the match-day squad; not least because he arrived at the same time as a considerably more experienced and costlier centre-back in the form of Mamadou Sakho.

That proved to be the case when Ilori failed to make a dent on the Reds’ first-team and was subsequently sent on loan to Spanish side Granada.

But since that move he has been mightily impressive, excelling despite a 1-0 loss on his debut and setting up the winner in his next match with a long cross-field pass Steven Gerrard would have been proud of.

That match – against Real Betis – also saw Ilori make 13 effective clearances and two interceptions; a performance in which he outshone his defensive teammates and grabbed one of the assists of the season for good measure.

Which raises an interesting question about the 20-year-old’s future: Will he one day slot into Liverpool’s back-line, or could he become football’s Holy Grail – a defensive midfielder with the ability to both protect those behind him and create for those in front of him?

Against Betis, Ilori had a pass-completion rate of 77%, while on his debut against Espanyol he was successful with an outstanding 91% of his passes.

So he has an eye for a pass, the ability to intercept and clear and, if you have seen his assist from the weekend, a passing-range that would be the envy of many considerably more experienced than him.

It will be a decision that he and Brendan Rodgers make together, and perhaps the young Portuguese has no inclination to play in front of a defence he could instead be marshalling. But given his considerable talent and the rarity of such players in the game, it may already have been a thought that has crossed the Liverpool boss’s mind.

Its also worth mentioning that he seemed very good at spotting and picking out forward runs. It wasnt a hit and hope tactic.

Brendan Rodgers is great at signing players to loan to other clubs.

 

Can't he also play CDM? He could be our next Alonso

 

No matter how good he is in Spain he needs to adapt to England.

The further back on field the more time it tends to take players to adapt.

If strikers don't excel in first season overseas (unless still young and not near peak anyway) they rarely get much better for that team.

Defenders frequently take several seasons to adapt and get best out of them.

This Tea Lorry guy may be fantastic in Spain, but don't expect him to immediately make an impact when he returns to us.

Oh... and N'Gog was a fantastic signing for us for £1mill. Never going to be good enough to lead a top 4 team- but as a cheap budget buy to fill in a gap, warm the bench, and rarely play. You couldnt expect much more for that money. We paid 7 times more for Aspas who appears less useful... although in football inflation... £1 mill then is probably more like £2 mill now... still a bargain.Derek
