Correct me if i'm wrong but I'm pretty sure we didnt score a single goal from a direct free kick last season. Surely with the likes of Tarbs, Faurlin and Buzacky in the squad we should be aiming to improve on this stat next year. If bullard comes on board then hoepfully he might whip a few in the top corner, but would be be able to get the ball of Taarabt to take a free kick in the first place?
You're right Stav, there was a time last season, when I couldn't believe greedy boy, wasn't taken off every set piece. Faurlin went close a couple of times.
Hopefully Warnock can talk Taarabt out of taking the free kicks next season. Love the guy but free-kicks in a goal-scoring area are wasted on him.
Agree, the goalscoring freekicks were rather disappointing. Hopefully Buz will be back to form, I have always preferred Buz to Adel for taking freekicks.
That's one area of our game that was lacking; set pieces. Faurlin came close a couple of times. He hit the post v Forest and took a miraculous save outta Hull's keeper towards the end of the season. I hope he in particular improves that part of his game as I think he could be better than Tarbs from a dead ball.
Can't stand today's one dimensional attitude to direct free kicks. Even when taken by a 'master' what's the scoring ratio? 1 in 10 if yer lucky? 2 maybe?. Was a time when free kicks were about plan and deception. The Brazilians were great at it and guess what? So were Rangers... when Venables was captain! Anyone remember that? Such a variety of possibilities that regularly ended up in the back of the net one way or another. Great entertainment. Much, much better than now.
It was those free kicks, more than anything else I can remember, that got me into QPR in the first place. The one where Gerry Francis lined up in the wall and Venables would flick the ball over the top of the wall for Francis to turn and volley was incredible. So much imagination compared to now. it shouldn't be forgotten that Terry Fenwick took a good free kick as well. Now we are lucky if the ball gets past the wall. I agree that Faurlin should be taking them though, I still can't believe that the one against Coventry didn't go in.
