When talking about a Spurs/l'arse ground share, the late great Peter Cook once said:

That won't work, we would have to disinfect the ground each time they played there.

The fans complaining when Thompson were our sponsors due to their red logo was pretty embarrassing. It's like they never noticed Arsenal have a white sponsor logo on their home kit, and often a navy one on their away kit...

I don't think that most people are massively offended by red sponsors on our kits because of Arsenal, Croydon.
It annoys me because it doesn't fit in with our kit and looks garish, especially with the AIA logo this season, which looks remarkably unprofessional.

Arsenal use a colour that's consistent with those of their kit. White on red for a kit that's red and white. Makes sense.
The red letters wouldn't look so bad in a different font or a more aesthetically pleasing design, but the colour would still be a bit jarring. It looks appalling on our light blue strip.

Someone elsewhere knocked up a photoshopped picture of Defoe with the logo in a dark navy:

    Much better.

For £80M over 5 years it's worth having, that's a quarter of a new stadium.

AIA aren't going to pay us a small fortune and then change their colour scheme just to make our tops look more pleasing on the eye. Sure it be great if we had a kit designed completely to match club colours including the sponsor but it's a non issue for me, as there are far more important aspects to be focusing on.

The more garish their logo is, the more it stands out, hence their reason for wanting to sponsor us. They're not going to change it to make it less noticeable.

Everything has a price in football these days whether it be sponsorship, stadium rights, legitimised touting, or shirt colours and crests (Cardiff)

Surely they don't want people to have a negative reaction to their brand, though? That can't be a good thing, can it?

Really? I thought it was because it's dawning on them that their kit is far uglier than ours. Hence the blue stripe on the sleeve this year. Next year they're planning to get rid of that unsightly red, and the year after that trade in that stupid gun for a handsome cockerel.

How can anyone be not interested in a product because of the colour of the lettering??

Would anyone refuse a red Ferrari?

TBH I am surprised a far East insurance concern sees Spurs as a good advertising vehicle
for their commercial aspirations. Of course, they may have been Levyed over the terms (in
which case the "Levy out"ers have something else to ponder :) ) .

I wondered that myself as looking at ttheir website, their market is all Asia. The money they are investing must be of a minor nature compared to their overall profit as a company and possibly they may also be sold on future opportunities, but it does seem an odd partnership, unless we're hugely popular in Asia.

The Premier League is extremely popular in Asia. We're regularly in the top third of it or so.
Wouldn't be surprised to see us picking up a player or two from that part of the world, though.

AIA advertising here is the same as AON the American insurance company who sponsored United. Why would a Yank or Asian company want business here? I don't think either are too interested in the comparitive small-fry domestic insurance for us mere plebs, the commercial insurance and re-insurance world is mind boggling.

Fair point. We don't always see the sponsorship deals from the same angle as the sponsor, they are going to be viewing this from large commercial /corporate opportunities so any concerns our fans have mean absolutely nothing to AIA as it doesn't effect their image.

They have a successful company /branding and have paid for the right to plaster their logo throughout our club and shirt......... No matter how ugly it looks!

Would be nice to hear from someone who works in the trade, to know the general ad mindset
is for businesses of this type. I find it hard to believe that businessmen who support Spurs or
other teams are going to enquire in their droves about AIA products just because of their name
    plastered everywhere doing a game.

Consumer product companies (Samsung etc) I can understand though.

The line is, "I know half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, but I can never figure out which half." It may be a case where AIA's thinking is as foggy as ours. But it does make sense to me: if you want a one-shot way of raising your corporate profile in most of the world, you could do far worse than sponsor a PL team. More and more people are watching them in Asia and North America. I'd never heard of them till now. Now I have.

With their name on our shirts, everyone who follows sport much will say, oh, yeah, AIA, they sponsor Spurs, don't they? I would also think it works as it does in the US, where sport is the small talk of the business world. Plaster your name on one of the famous clubs and suddenly most people in business have heard of you, at least, and figure you have to be a pretty big deal, which may be your goal.

I take the "they sponsor Spurs, don't they" premise as a given.
Tis whether it converts into concrete increase in business in places like Europe etc
that is the head-scratcher for me.
