Yes, but that was when he came in all guns blazing, without knowing the state of the books. He was a very foolish man with the way he purchased us and it's bit him in the arse, hence the 5 year plan that we are now part the way though.
Same with us, a ****load of players who will get no where near the first team (cos they ain't good enough), on massive money that's a drain on resources that affect what we can offer to new better players. The legacy of poor judgement and trying to be flash. But you must admit without him, promotion and staying in the Premier would have been a lot more difficult so for me at least he's earnt his money.
Yeah, without a doubt. I mean, imagine we gave Nolan his 5 year deal, and in about 2 years when the game is really passing him by, we would have him sitting here, pretty much as smith is now on massive wages but unable to get anywhere near the first 11. I'm pleased the big wages are over a Newcastle, weeds out the players who don't really want to be there and stops the money hungry using us as a pay day.
but in a way it does limit who you can actually bring in, so as you've highlighted, it has it's benefits and pitfalls. so it is a tricky balance.
This was the issue I had with Carroll being sold. It's all well and good getting 35 mil, but it's not like we can go out and get a 20 mil striker to replace him as a striker comanding that fee would be on massive wages. Like you say, it's a tricky balance.
Snap your hands off for short and Quinn. For all our 2 donkeys seem to be pulling us round on the money front, their actions over the last few year is unforgivable. I'm of the opinion that I want them out, but accept that they are going to be there a while and there is nothing we can do about it.
Do you think Ash is better than Freddie Shepard? I know he got a few things wrong but he always backed his managers. Would you have him back?
Not sure, Ashley is in effect fixing the mistakes Shepard made with his overspending, so things might of been different if Ashley came in and the club wasn't already swamped with debt. But on the other hand, there just aren't any excuses for some of the decisions and mistakes this current lot have made.
Well I've nowt against any of ya's, my bird is from West Denton although lived in Gateshead most of her life. All her brothers are mags & live all over Tyneside. Dunston, Cruddas Park, Cowgate, etc. but Can't deny Shepard backed his men to the hilt, would you like the club to go back to the mass spending days of SJH? Not having a go my friend, just after your opinion is all,.
I don't think it any club outside of the top 4/5 could sustain massive spending like that these days, especially with the new uefa rules coming in. It was a great period in our history and would love those times again, but I have to be honest, with out Ashley, we as a club might not exist because of all that reckless spending and it's a position I don't want the club to be in again. The older I've got I've started to look more at the financial side of things instead of just thinking that the 11 on the pitch every week was what it was all about. Money has built the game up to what it is today but it has also ruined it if that makes sence.
Makes perfect sense pal, sometimes I think football will implode on itself due to its own sheer greed, not just talking about players but clubs, fa, premier league, etc. Fans are having their eyes ripped out & it's time a stop was put to it.
