I have long championed the commissioning of a bust or statue for one of our most historic figures if not the number one SAFC player of all time IMO. Horatio Stratton "Raich" Carter (21 December 1913 – 9 October 1994) As one of our all time superstar players, born and bred in the City, he was the youngest captain to take us to our 6th and final League Champions win in 1936 and in the 1937 FA Cup Final v Preston NE, scoring in our 3-1 victory. I think it would be a fitting tribute to a great player to have a bust or statue of him in the main entrance of the SOL.
While I agree and would love to see Carter, Monty, Cloughie, Kerr, KP and Quinn or even Porterfield resurrected outside the stadium £20,00 won't buy you a hat for the statue nowadays.
Thinking more along the lines of it starting the fund mate. A good statue will cost best part of £70k these days but a bust less so.
We do all know the difficulties with our love for Raich Carter, don't we? I will probably start to ramble now and yes I'm full of red wine but I feel I have to say there may have been problems with this a few years ago and he was a great sportsman and he should be honoured but you know why he hasn't been dont you? God I hope I'm right but hope I'm so wrong at the same time. I might have to leave the forum. Someone help me out. x
That's much less than I imagined to be honest. We've got an absolute plethora of legends we could do it for. I agree Carter is probably up next but would personally love to see the Clown Prince somewhere.
Couldn't decide between Raich and the Clown Prince if we are going to put the money towards a bust but IMO the club should put the money to SAFC Africa.
Put it towards your big fence to separate the two sets of fans outside the SOS. Or put it towards a new set of big keys for the mascots!
Maybe the strange circumstances of him leaving Sunderland? Or doing a Giggs at Hull with a directors Mrs?
Why not buy a hospitality box for the season and have an independant draw for the seats each home match for every season ticket holder.
