I know that I am an old-fart,but when is common sense going to be applied to football??How the heck can Wayne Rooney be worth £300,000 per week when a normal working-class worker gets something like £15.000 per year??Sir Tom Finney was a class-act in his day,but didn't earn money that was seen as obscene in his life-time.Our modern-day footballers are out of reality IMO,and it is about time they got in the real world!!

This is the problem with sport in general, stupid salaries. It is also the reason why the same teams end up at or near the top in every league. Its all about who can pay the most in wages and transfer fees, and also why the rest of the clubs are fighting for scraps on a consistent basis. UEFA believe the new fair play rules will even it out but that's bollox. The rich keep getting richer and thick scouse tossers like rooney get paid more than a soldiers wages over ten years in one week. Its disgusting!

It'll stop when fans stop making it possible. Supply and demand, capitalism, so on and so forth.

The fact that we pay the money we do to clubs, watch TV to make advertising lucrative and whatnot makes it possible for clubs to pay the money they do.

Simple answer he's English over hyped and overpaid. That is why the national team struggle so much due to their over dependence on reputation rather than ability. IMO it stems right back to youth football with their demands on structure and winning over expression and being comfortable with the ball.

No he ain't. He's on less than half of Messi or Ronaldo. And less than Bale as well.
    Still way too much though.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the best footballers on the planet. Neither are worth the kinds of money discussed here.

Rooney is nowhere near these two players but is one of the best English players (which is why England are ****e) and Moyes should flog him. Let some other set of mugs pay for below average services.

I continue to maintain my interest in football by ignoring all this ****e mate.

I go for the crack, the mates, the pre-match pints and the 90 minutes.

    All the rest is bullshit.

Let them pay this over hyped Mr Rooney his £300,000 grand a week. It will be very interesting seeing what the fans reaction towards it might be, given the fact that United will not make Champions league football next season.

its all to do with marketing.

Football shirts, advertising etc with Rooney's name on it sell. His agent knows it, so thats why he can demand such a high salary.

Beckham was even more, he might have had a lower weekly salary, but I think he got 10% of "Beckham" shirt and merchandise sales while he was playing at real madrid - so he was probably earning more than Rooney is now

Google had Ronaldo down as earning £288,000 per week and he was earning more than Messi, and that was what I went by. Although things do change quickly in football, so that info could be out of date now..

Someone on Talk ****e described it quite well the other day when they said something like "the problem with him is that there are 2 Wayne Rooneys and you don't know which you're getting, one a world class footballer, one of the best players in the world apart from Messi/Ronaldo, and the other a fat kid with hooves for feet". Made me laugh.

To be fair to Rooney he's no more overpaid than the likes of Gardner, Wickham or the rest of our lot.

He probably makes the club more than his wages form the sales of replica tops to daft Africans ......... the whole game has gone mad.

I just ignore it all and pretend our players care, which they probably don't.
