Norwich come into the match in 16th place in the table on 25 points with Spurs in 5th place on 50 points. This will be the 82nd time the two teams have met, and Tottenham have found Norwich a very tough nut to crack recently with just the one win in the last five matches. Norwich City were founded in 1902 by three former Norwich Church of England Young Men's Society players. The club lost their amateur status in 1905 and joined the Southern League shortly afterwards. The first meeting between Spurs and Norwich came in April 1906 in the Southern League and the East Anglian club won 4-1 at White Hart Lane. The reverse fixture at Newmarket Road was won by Spurs 3-0. Vivian Woodward scored three goals for Spurs against Norwich that season. The clubs met for two further seasons in the Southern League, resulting in two wins for Norwich, a win for Spurs and a drawn match. Spurs joined the Football League for season 1908-09 and the next meeting with Norwich came in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in January 1915 at "The Nest" in Rosary Road, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Canaries. Four friendlies were played between 1916 and 1925 with Spurs winning two games, Norwich one and one drawn game. The first Football League meeting between the two clubs came in the Second Division in December 1935 with Spurs winning 2-1 at the Lane, while Norwich won the reverse fixture 1-0 in April 1936 at their new home in Carrow Road. The clubs met for a further three seasons in Division Two resulting in four wins for Spurs and two for Norwich. During World War Two, Spurs & Norwich played two matches in the Football League South. An FA Cup fifth round match in February 1959 ended in a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane and Norwich pulled-off a 'giant killing' act by beating Spurs 1-0 in the replay at Carrow Road. The first meeting in the Top Flight of English Football came in October 1972 when a Martin Chivers goal at Carrow Road wasn't enough to prevent a 2-1 win for Norwich. The clubs contested the 1973 Football League Cup Final at Wembley and a Ralph Coates goal was enough to bring the silverware to White Hart Lane. Martin Chivers scored a brace in Tottenham's 3-1 win against Norwich in the reverse First Division fixture at the Lane a week later. The clubs met regularly in Division One from season 1973-74 to 1991-92 with honours being generally even. Both Spurs and Norwich were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93, but the Canaries lost their top flight status after the 1994-95 season and returned for one season in 2004-05. Spurs won 6 of the 10 Premier League matches played with Norwich winning twice and two drawn games. The clubs met in a pre-season friendly at Carrow Road in July 2008 with Darren Bent scoring four goals in a 5-1 Spurs win. The fixture at Carrow Road in December 2011 resulted in a rather comfortable 2-0 away win for Spurs, thanks to a brace of goals scored by Gareth Bale in the 55th and 67th minutes. Things were rather different for the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in April 2012 with Spurs losing 1-2 to Norwich. Jermain Defoe scored for Spurs with Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett netting for the Canaries in a match which would prove vital for Tottenham's Champions League qualification chances. During the Summer of 2012, former Spurs player and assistant manager Chris Hughton was appointed Norwich manager, Cameroon defender Sebastien Bassong moved from Spurs to Norwich for a £3,750,000 transfer fee and Spurs striker Harry Kane joined Norwich on a season's loan. The Premier League match at White Hart Lane in September resulted in a 1-1 draw with Mousa Dembele putting Spurs ahead after 68 minutes only for Robert Snodgrass to score a late equaliser with just five minutes remaining. The clubs met in the 4th Round of the Football League (Capital One) Cup at Carrow Road at the end of October and Gareth Bale put Spurs ahead in the 66th minute. An own goal from Jan Vertonghen, who deflected an Alex Tettey shot, levelled matters after 84 minutes and Norwich progressed to the 5th Round through a Simeon Jackson goal three minutes later. The game at White Hart Lane in January 2013 ended with honours even after a 1-1 draw. Wes Hoolahan put the visitors ahead after 32 minutes but a stunning solo goal from Gareth Bale ten minutes from time shared the points. Goals in each half from Gylfi Sigurdsson won the three points for Spurs in their Premier League home match against Norwich in September 2013. Overall, Spurs have won 35, Norwich have won 24 and 22 of the 81 matches between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City Matches 1906-2014 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Norwich.... Norwich have been in good form, performance wise. They battered both Cardiff and West Ham but results wise came away with nothing, then there was that draw at home against Man City. Although both Cardiff and West Ham let themselves get outplayed while Man City had an off day so with the power we have in midfield, and Lennon and Townsend both hopefully starting then I'm going for us to win. Be interesting to see if Eriksen finds a way into the team as the Newcastle game showed that a team of power pace and no real natural creativity can get a result and produce an attacking display, unlike when Avb was manager.
Great with the ball at his feet, next to useless without it, game seems to go on around him then, thats what he needs to brush up on imo.
Newcastle was a radical departure for Sherwood. He seemed a KISS kind of manager: 4-4-2, get your players feeling comfortable, and hit on the counter when possible to get your dangerous players into space. And then 4 central midfielders, a high line, and vast spaces left behind, seemingly to tempt Newcastle into pouring into them and leaving spaces behind as well. My memory of the game will be Walker sprinting back time after time to prevent players going in clear on goal. So what happens now: do we go back to the way we played every other game that Sherwood coached, or try to repeat our best performance? I know Norwich like to play football, but I would at least like to see Eiriksen to provide some creativity--though I have a hard time thinking who he should replace, unless Dembele isn't 100% fit. Whatever I may have thought of the tactics, there is a good argument the starting team were our best 11. I'm concerned as both Ade and Dembele seemed to be walking gingerly when they were subbed.
When Eriksen becomes as productive as Jason Dozzell was in terms of end product, then we can allow him to be that luxury player who shows brilliance but IMO he hasn't reached the standard of Dozzell yet!
One game a few weeks ago I started paying particular to Eriksen's positioning off the ball. Have to say that it looked woeful at times. He just didn't seem to have an instinct as to where he could easily move to to just make it clearly harder for the opposition. He seemed to be neither closing the man or the space. Added to that he really does seem easy to get off the ball still. It's as if players just have to get near him and they win the ball. Whilst he is undoubtedly skillful and his shooting is good, his passing is OK etc he has not shown enough to, for instance, oust any of the midfield who played v Newcastle IMO. Because the creative side of his game is just not strong enough to over-ride the negatives as he is still getting used to the physicality and speed of the EPL, it looks to me.
This may be a tad unfair but I assumed a touch of the Ukraineitis might have struck Ade there, what with the game already being won and him having scored two and set one up.
Ease up, he's a young man. It takes time to grow into a Dozzell type figure. You want too much too soon.
"This may be a tad unfair but I assumed a touch of the Ukraineitis might have struck Ade there" About the first time in ages when we don't actually care whether he throws a sickie pre Europa away tie.
after hearing the CE of Norwich hanging Hughton out to dry I think that Norwich will play better on Sunday...the players seem fond of Hughton so will have a point to prove to their own board!
I think it was Norwich that Eriksen did well against in the home game and I felt quite excited about the prospect, be good if he could repeat that impression.
Seems our rivals have a lot of "easy" games this weekend. So we have to do something to keep in touch!
SPURS TEAM NEWS: Tim Sherwood has confirmed a number of the players who didn’t travel to Dnipropetrovsk this week are back in contention for Sunday’s Premier League match at Norwich City. Hugo Lloris, Kyle Walker, Younes Kaboul, Mousa Dembele, Aaron Lennon and Emmanuel Adebayor were left at home for our Europa League excursion, but Tim confirmed that are all back in the frame for the trip to Carrow Road. Tim has also been pleased to see Sandro making good progress on the road to full recovery from a calf problem, the Head Coach reporting that the Brazilian international midfielder is “getting nearer” to a return to first team action. Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela remain out. I don't want to count my c0ckerels before they're hatched but I just thought I'd mention that a win on Sunday at Norwich will equal Spurs Premier League record of 53 points after 27 matches. And a win in the following home game against Cardiff City will set a new club record of 56 points from 28 games. Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Points Won 1992-93 to 2013-14
A few stats going into tomorrows game. Tottenham have won 6 and lost just 1 of their last 10 premier league matches against Norwich, and have won 4 and lost none of their last 6 games at carrow road. None of the 63 subs used by Norwich in the league this season have scored or assisted a goal for them. since sherwood took over, only chelsea (24) have got more points than spurs (23). in the 10 premier league games under sherwood, spurs have averaged 2.1 goals per game, and have not failed to score in any of the 10 games. Norwich have scored just 5 goals in their last 11 league games. Of the 5 goals scored, they've each come in different games, meaning they've not scored more than 1 per game, when they have scored. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel and Johan Elmander have produced just 1 goal and 6 shots on target between them this season, despite playing a combined 1,961 mins of PL football. Adebayor has scored 8 goals from 13 shots on target, i just 908 mins of football, averaging a goal every 114mins this season.
Absolutely....I wonder if Norwich fans want to send them packing asap! ....who's Ricky Volkswagen btw?
Welcome to our world of entertaining , goal filled football! We have been creating more chances lately but cannot hit a barn door. The wolf has been a massive disappointment and Old- mander is well past his best in my opinion. Gary Hooper is our most threatening striker, who will likely start on his own up front. Becchio is our other " striker" but he has never had a look in and seems out of favour. The focus on inverted wingers has been for me the real problem. We create virtually nothing through the middle. We did well against Man. City and need that same performance against you. Hughton splits the supporters big time and when you look at his stats you can see why I.e. The subs. Many think he should have gone months ago but has seemed to pull a win out of the hat when the chop is immanent. The game tomorrow has the same feel about it so hopefully he will follow with form ( although that means we then get nothing from the next 3!).
so it's gonna be 2 nil to norwich with both Ricky Van W and Elmander scoring after coming on as substitues
