Being the eternal optimist I'll have to say our best season will be the next one. Out of the two you list, first season in the Premiership (plus the FA Cup run). New experience but spoilt slightly by some of the bias refereeing.
Very hard choice between the 2, both hold some fantastic memories and both had there ups and downs. I would probably have to go for our first premiership season, despite the low points i'll never forget that first game against Fulham, the first half against Everton at the KC, away wins at Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle, running Man United very close at Old Trafford and drawing at Anfield. Although it was pretty bleak from January onwards, it was a season of football i always wanted to see, and a season that thousands of city fans before us never got to see. We stayed up against the odds and really proved everyone wrong by doing so.
I'd say the promotion season. Seeing the us come from virtually nowhere to win the playoffs was fantastic. Matches like West Brom (away), Palace (home), Barnsley (away) Watford (league & playoffs), Leicester (away) were fantastic days out. The win at Wembley just capped off a fantastic season. You can't beat the feeling of winning week in week out and the team and back room team were fantastic. The start of our first premier league season was great, but like someone said before, the novelty wore off, and City got beat far too often after our initial success. Also I didn't like every johnny come lately coming to the KC and wearing their Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea shirts and sit in our end. They simply only came to see the opposition and it annoyed me. Also the unwated attention Browny brought on himself after the Man City and spittlegate incidents and the garbage people began to spout about City not winning once in 5 months, started to wind me up. People who remember the old 606 board will remember how boring muppets like Blackcatsforever and the arsenal trols were.
The Arsenal fans on 606 were pretty horrific, it's like every other one was a TWF/Percy character only they were proper wums winding up the opposition not their own fans like our sad lad does. Arrogant bastards!
i watched the highlights dvd of the liverpool game the other day, ash rattling into tackles with gerrard, mendy running rings round them, and mcshane scoring ..seems a lifetime ago, hard to belive just 2 1/2 years...
Barring Wembley, that was the best game I have ever been to (I didn't get to Arsenal incase you think I'm slightly deluded). When Carra knocked it that own goal for 2-0 it was just unreal. It probably made it all the more amazing for me because my dad was a Liverpool fan. Mendy was having a blinder until he was fored back to right back because McShane went off injured. It could have been oh so different... Back to the original question, 100% first PL season
I'd say the promotion season. Our side on paper and in practice were class. We played 4-4-2 and attacked teams, winning a home game 2 or 3 nil was common place. Seems ages ago now... Turns out, the reason it was so good is that PD was spending a ****ing fortune that we just didn't have. But at the time we didn't know that and it was ****ing great.
So you'd rather beat Southampton and Watford at the KC than go to Newcastle, Arsenal and Spurs and win?? I'm having none of that. They don't call it 'the promise land' for no reason Even though we won more in the Championship (obviously), and were involved in a tight play-off race, I'd swap a Premier League survival fight for that any day.
I just enjoyed how good we were, nothing to do with the opposition. I'll never forget that side. Turner, Ricketts, Ash, Marney (who was good then), Garcia, Deano and Campbell, with Okocha and Pedersen for if things got desperate (which they never did). And the way we played so attacking and scored goals. It might be due to how we've been so boring and defensive since then and hardly won any games, that I look back so fondly upon the days when we were unstoppable.
excitement of the play offs will not be beaten unless you get to FA cup later rounds or dare i say it Europe one day. Overall season however has to be the first prem season.
First Premier League season without any shadow of a doubt. I witnessed things that season I genuinely believed i never would do in my lifetime and no-one will take those memories away. Only the second team ever to win at the Emirates in the league, scoring 3 at Old Trafford, winning at Spurs and Arsenal within 8 days, being joint top of the Premiership after 8 games, nearly nicking a win at Stamford Bridge, winning our first ever top flight game from behind, watching Ash shoulder to shoulder with Gerrard and Lampard, Phil Brown tactically out thinking some of the top managers in the country (he did at the beginning of the season), seeing Deano represent (and score kind of) the tigers in the Prem, Turner actually looking like an England class player, the likes of Giggs playing a league game at the KC, watching us every week on Match of the Day, surviving on the last day, getting to the quarter finals of the FA cup (and being robbed), Geovanni being the most exciting player in years we've had at the KC, Ash becoming the only player to captain a side in all for divisions, France, Dawson and Myhill representing us in all four divisions, I could go on and on. Just typing this now makes me so excited, I almost have to pinch myself that it really happened. Think back to where we were 10 years before and those 10 years culminated in a season that for me I don't see will ever be topped in our entire history. THAT was the best trip I've ever been on.
That video is brilliant. Yeah that 1st season does run it close actually you're right. Just the whole thing. Starting around xmas 2007 until May 2009. Absolutely brilliant times.
Watching that has made me realise how much I actually miss Ashbee, ***an, king, cousin, geo, mendy and turner
