Southampton were poor because our tactics stopped them playing their normal game.

Chelsea did the same at Man City and 'Mourinho's a football genius' ......... bunch of ****ers the media mate.

    Poyet on cup win

    http://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2014/february/gus-poyet-post-southampton-fa-cup

    Video ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Boss pleased with fluid cup performance as Black Cats progress.
Gus Poyet couldn’t fault his players’ efforts as Sunderland booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with Budweiser.
Craig Gardner’s super strike four minutes into the second period settled matters, with the Black Cats making it four games unbeaten against the Saints this season.
“I’m very pleased, Southampton are a very difficult side to play against; it’s very difficult to have the ball, very difficult to have chances,” Poyet told SAFSee afterwards.
There were players today that have given me a lot to think about for the future and also about the shape of the team and the idea of playing with two strikers
    - Gus Poyet
“Normally they are on top and I think overall we were better than them.”
Sunderland came on strong following a first half of few changes, with Poyet’s team talk at the break focused on his side creating more chances.
His players responded admirably, with Gardner firing home the winner when his shot from outside the box found the net off the underside of the crossbar.
“We were, in terms of playing, controlling it better than them in the first half but without a shot on target,” Poyet explained.
“They were more dangerous than us and that’s the only thing we tried to address at half time.
“What a way to address it, with the goal from Craig Gardner.
“Then we had the chances to score again and we missed a few possibilities and decisions, but overall I’m very pleased.”
Poyet also praised the fluidity of his side’s performance, with the players adapting well to the nine changes made to the starting line-up.
And the Black Cats boss admits he’s got some tough decisions to make going forward with a number of players pressing their claims for a regular place.
“There were players today that have given me a lot to think about for the future and also about the shape of the team and the idea of playing with two strikers,” he said.
“I thought we were excellent on the ball today. Everybody was brave with their passing and decisions and that was the part that pleased me the most.”

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet hailed his second-string side's fight in seeing off Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round.

Poyet made nine changes to his team on Saturday, and saw them move into the last eight thanks to a stunning long-range strike from Craig Gardner five minutes after the break at the Stadium of Light.

Having ended Southampton's seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions to secure their progression, Poyet said he was pleased with the spirit Sunderland showed.

"We have a got a good way of playing now and fighting for the club," the Uruguayan told BT Sport.

"Sometimes you need the whole group and sometimes when these games go for you it is important for the rest of the season."

Sunderland captain John O'Shea, who kept his place in the starting XI, revealed that Poyet had told the lesser used members of his squad to maximise their opportunity to shine.

"Gus Poyet said to the lads beforehand, make a statement," the defender explained.

"We have big games coming up, Craig Gardner's goal was fantastic and he does do it every day in training.

"Southampton had some very dangerous players and they have some quality but we had to be alive at the back and maybe the pitch helped us out a bit."

The truth is you had a better attendance than us today - we know we'd be on thin ice! Sometimes you have to suck it up and say well done.

TBH, they can't fill their ground, the place emptied after 70 minutes against Spurs and they can't win a cup match.

    What can they gloat about?

And for loads of lads who support Sunderland.

I have a mate who drives, on his own, from Geneva where he's working.

He's typical of the people I know.

Are you saying he should be there today, to watch the reserves, rather than the Cup Final?

Did anyone see the players applaud the (admittedly sparse) crowd at the end of the game?

'cos I didn't and I'm most vexed by it.

TBF, our reserves played to a system designed to stifle your normal game ...... you couldn't cope with it and your manager sat in his dug out like a glove puppet.

Our reserves were way above average considering most of them met each other earlier this week <laugh>

    Not possible mate.

It's much cheaper to fly into Luton and get the bus to my son's in Mansfield.

The lad I'm talking about posts on SMB as Alpine Exile. He drives alone from Geneva to Stockton where his folks are.

Drinks in the Victory and works for UNESCO, what a combination <laugh>
