Cheers, I know where you mean - opposite the Dram shop? Didn't the old Manchester hotel get converted into one of those cheapo "2 meals for a tenner" pubs?
Baileys was Romeo & Julietts by the time I was a regular. During my New Romantic phase. Short lived. Then returned to my punk roots and embraced Spiders. Only Morrissey and a move 200 miles south east saved me. Dingwalls was short lived but so so brilliant. Saw Wilko Johnson there. Blew Me Away.
I think it was still known as Baileys, it was always split in to two venues. Romeos was the disco and Baileys was the cabaret venue, used to get some good acts in but the chicken in a basket was ****e.
That chicken in a basket tasted fantastic after a gallon of beer... nearly as good as one of those hot dogs outside of ABC Fortunately i never tried either when of a lesser inebriation....
Got food poisoning off one of those, or it may have been the baked beans I had with it. Either way I was off work for a week.
Meet in the Centre Bar, on to George and Queens, into Trogg Bar - a clip off the bouncer on the way in (Alf Macklin - remember that cracking RL left-winger?) on to Bailey's, dance, smooch or scrap; bloody great! Long walk home down Hessle Rd, would do it all over again.
Was you one of those OPE reds ? Or one of those smelly hippies from the voodoo disco in st Michaels church ? I use to go in star n garter , white horse. Centre bar.... Anyone remember gondola coffee house used by Hells Angels and assorted hippy types was in city centre .
Sometimes I wouldn't know if I had eaten what I bought, I could often remember buying something to eat but would wake up the next day not actually knowing if I had eaten it or not. Getting them saved having to raid the freezer when I got home.....
I can remember it but it became Lasers just as I became old enough to get in (about 15). Still had a can bar, sticky floors and aggressive bouncers.
for me, nights out in 'ull 1990s Bev Road starting at Gardeners Arms, ending up in LAs othertimes Oasis, Waterfront, Pepy's (didn't last long I think?), Institute Won the "how many birds can you snog in one night" comp with 3! also one won the "how many slaps can you get in one night" in Beverley.. crazy days..
Star and Garter was the first Pub my old man took me to. I still go there from time-to-time if I'm out on the razz... Normally to finish off though as it doesn't shut until 6am. Proper party animal me
Hull City AFC was also formed in the Manchester Hotel (Trog Bar) In any decent city such a significant event as that taking place would be recognised with a blue civic society plaque on the outside of the building.
Enjoyed reading these comments they made me chuckle what doesn't please me though is the dire state of a night out in town these days. Had reason to go out one Saturday night not so long back, cold yes but I wasn't prepared for how dead the city centre is these days, those City Of Culture folk had better start coming up with a few ideas to liven things up somewhat.
Whats the reasons for town being so dead now? Is it just a sign of the times or other reasons? When i was in my younger days thats all everyone seemed to do (well i did, so i assumed that was everyone). The new town was always full, and the old town was very similar.
