If I lived in England I would be worried that Scotland would gain independence because that would result in a permanent Tory majority in Westminster. I would then see Wales demanding independence, perhaps creating a Union with Scotland, as the Welsh tend not to vote for the Tories. where this would leave the Unionists in Northern Ireland is anyone's guess, but I suspect that they have closer affiliations with Scotland.

The net effect of all this would be to, basically, kick England out of the Union, and have the Tories rule forever, possibly with UKIP as the main opposition.

    Not a pleasant thought.

Not so NZ - Labour would have been the governing party from 1997 with or without Scotland. Just because it was so close in 2010 does not mean it is always that close

Thanks for the correction, Harry, even if you do ruin a good extrapolation!

If Scotland do leave the United Kingdom what will happen to the Scottish Nationalist political party beacause their reason to exist will have gone?

Nothing AK - their name is the Scottish National Party, not Nationalist, and their raison d'être is not merely to gain independence. The 'National' bit is just a name really - same as their Australian, New Zealand & Sth African counterparts, if not the same political leanings. Thankfully, they are not the same as the English version though....

Really good one from the lad, and he gets my vote, but it needs loads more to catch up with some of the others.

I am too young (just) to have seen him play but I do remember, on several visits to Deepdale, the huge photograph of him dribbling down the wing, covered in spray which took pride of place in the Preston Supporters Club - and the awe in which he was held by NE fans, even by those who were obviously too young to have seen him play.

"Great" is an often over-employed adjective applied to the most mundane and mediocre players in the modern era, but he was truly great and puts many of today's overpaid prima donnas firmly into the shade.

Morning all from a crisp and dry Weston-super-Mare, though rain is promised for later!

I do remember seeing Sir Tom in my early years of football interest, but only on the TV!

Have a good day and beat the 'Boro' <ok>

about £800 each... which was a lot more than if we had booked planes and hotel separately.... but taking mum 93 (and then wife in crutches) meant everyone wanted just a bit of extra quality and support. The hotel was top notch...

Morning all. I leave for India in 4 hours time. 27 hours later I arrive at my destination. One of the joys of living in NZ is the isolation - until I have to go somewhere. Its been called the tyranny and protection of distance.

Still, there is time for a win to send me on my way with a smile on my face. I certainly don't want to spend hours on a plane brooding over the loss of another two goal lead.

And losing at cricket. I expect a hard time at immigration as a consequence. I'm travelling on my NZ passport rather then the British one because the visa fees for NZers are about half what they are for Poms. I didn't think about the cricket when I applied!
