City, Arsenal and Chelsea all been dropping points recently... even if City win games in hand- still max of 4 points in gap from 1st to 4th. With Liverpool and Spurs winning- the gap in the table is really closing. Everton and United dropping further back over time. In reality the top 4 could now finish in any order, even if we are the least likely of the 4 to win. Furthermore though- it is highly possible that both ourselves and Spurs finish in the top 4. I don't expect to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup this weekend- but I really think we have a decent chance at overtaking them in the league before seasons end. Spurs could too at this rate.
Would be hilarious if Arsenal dropped out the Top4 and us and Spurs made it. Just brilliant. Wont happen though.
If we took third from one of those above us- it would be even more amusing if United won the CL as bad as they are this year (not that I'd ever wish them silverware). ... it would not be funny if that happened whilst we were in 4th!
I for one, feel only relief about protecting our #4 spot today. Cannot bring myself to look higher up the table after today's poor performance. It was a poor one no question about it on my mind - we were gifted a deflection and an idiotic decision by Riether. Rodgers will talk about grit and spirit. Sure, that's in our genes anyhow. Beyond that, I see a team that is only very proficient in counterattack and that's it. We're confused in all other aspects. Rodgers, address it!
Lets not worry about that, we meet on March 30th. I worry more about people thinking that we played well tonight.
We got 3 points and as far as tonight is concerned that is all that matters. Did we play well - no BUT we got away with it. Can we put right the mistakes we made - probably yes! In that YES the saving grace exists. If you won't lift your eyes then I will. Arsenal are in danger of repeating their shoot-yourself -in-the-foor trick. Tonight they played pretty football but were toothless and slack at the back. Without Aguero, City appear to have lost their mojo. Chelsea would be favourites but Maureen wants them to display how good a defensive manager he is. They all have their problems!
Oh my god some of our fans are spoilt brats. When Man Utd/Chelsea/City used to play poorly and win people complained we weren't grinding wins out when we played poorly and that it was the sign of true champions. When we do it we're just lucky and need to change things ASAP.
It's against a team fighting for survival, it was always going to be a scrappy tight game. Some people on here ask for too much.
I guess you didn't watch the game, or saw it while vacuuming. It was a stuttering performance by our standards, made more frustrating by the fact that we haven't been able to properly solve this kind of game all season. I don't think that winning a close one necessarily amounts to grinding out a hard fought win. Nor do I think some players fought that hard today. I'd be proud of grinding out a hard fought win as much as anyone, but that was just a close shave, a 'phew' moment.
Arsenal are still very much in the race for 4th as they are for the title. They got beaten by us, united best them earlier and drew, city beat them earlier and so did Chelsea. They've not beaten a top club yet and in March they play Spurs and Chelsea away in consecutive games followed by City at home the Everton away. That's a horrible bunch of games that could easily drag them back into the mix.
I hope we can keep around the point margin ahead of Spurs when we play them, hopefully beat them, and create a bit of space there.
Need Spurs to slip up a bit before they play us again. The have Chelsea and Arsenal before then. But would rather them drop points elsewhere. Draws in those games would be good.
The way this seasons going our GD could be vital. Saying that we're 4 points off the top with both City and Chelsea coming to Anfield….Maybe, just maybe…..
Take into account all the teams at the top have cup commitments too, the dream is alive, very much alive. But likely to turn into a nightmare knowing us
Don't count yourself or Spurs (twice) as top clubs anymore? (But other than that, I agree). But most teams have 3 or 4 toughies left... just so happens that ours are all consecutive. We've got 3 very winnable games before that run and 5 very winnable ones after it. If we're within a couple of points of 4th after that run I'd say we're a shoe-in for top 4. Two of your last five are Chelsea and City. Spurs have a very tough set of games in a month or so followed by a set of very winnable last 6 matches actually too.
