Hello, Lets play handicapper for a moment (as tomorrow we get the official weights for the Grand National) and I ask you what would you do with the following horses Tidal Bay 168 Long Run 163 Hunt Ball 162 Triolo D'Alene 158 Rocky Creek 157 Katenko 156 Burton Port 145 Court By Surprise 134 If you stuck by the handicap it would go Tidal Bay 11 10 Long Run 11 5 Hunt Ball 11 4 Triolo D'Alene 11 Rocky Creek 10 13 Katenko 10 12 Burton Port 10 1 Court By Surprise 9 4 I think he will compress it to TB 11 10 LR 11 7 HB 11 6 TDA 11 3 RC 11 2 K 11 1 BP 10 5 CBS 9 8 As such you would say those at the top of the weights would have a very fair chance on the marks, especially Long Run and Tidal Bay.
Except that Long Run will clout one fence after another and either pull up or fall. The only one on your list I would give a squeak to is Trio D'Alene. Not bad guesstimating on the weights though
The weight in normal terms is difference between top weight and horse, and same from 11st 10 to carried weight So MK - 139 TB - 168 Difference 29lbs - 29lbs off 164 (11st 10) = 135 or 9st 9lb
I wouldn't do anything..why would anyone?..the existing marks are what the contenders should race off. The first year Smith tried this ridiculous system only four horses were in contention form Valentines second time around..complete farce but then this is the clown who gave Master Minded a 186 rating when he and his team rated their first Grade 1 event. Giving the best horses a lenient mark is inequitable and doesn't work. These beasts generally have other targets during the calendar and only enter this as an after thought when they are over the top or too old. They don't run over hurdles thrice before entering the fray like the modern day specialists. In any case the race is a shadow of it's former self and has lost ALL of it's lustre. I would dig out the brooks again, heighten and restiffen the fences and increase the field size...this used to be the greatest race in the world and a supreme test for riders and racehorses, (clue is the name) not a namby pamby event for animal welfare do gooders. Nothing more to add...for now...
Why stop there Dex? Add rows of barbed wire across the fences, fill in the water jumps and plant land mines, drift mustard gas across the Melling Road, and put a sniper in the stands! Then make Warhorse favourite
As my regular readers are aware I’ve been on Long Run at 33’s for a while now and so am awaiting the unveiling of the old weights with keen, and I do mean keen, interest. I’d love the old boy to be given as low a perch as possible but being realistic I’d imagine he’ll get hit with something in the region of 11-5 to 11-7 below Tidal Bay who will top ‘em on 11-10. I do though envisage after this pair the weights being compressed and that is where the brilliant mind of Mr Henderson comes to the fore as he has got his perch down and also got a lot of no more than ‘above average’ horses to be imposted around his great Champion. The question must be what will the 3rd highest weighted carry and I think it will be in the region of 11-4 or 11-5 with many, and I do mean many, more following closing in behind that one. The amazing thing is I really do believe that Long Run (who cannily may run on Thursday once the weights are written in stone) will be giving no more than 9 pounds or so to some very ordinary horses here! Nass, on the above figures surely Katenko will be lowered from that 156 after his dismal performance on Saturday. If his GN weight is similarly adjusted he’d be a leading candidate for the Shrewd with a capital ‘S’ Venetia. You could say he’s the one I fear the most. Love this day though as you can guarantee after the weights are unveiled ever forum member will be looking at one horse or another and exclaiming, ‘Golly gosh, cor blimey, I say, how well handicapped is that old boy!’

Long Run 11-9. Cor blimey. Another example of the horse racing authorities in this country persecuting greatness. The did it with ‘King’ Kieren, they did it with Mr Henderson in the past and now they’ve done it to the forum’s favourite again. How on earth can he get put within 1 pound of Tidal Bay?!? The one consolation is that the weights have been most deffo definitely compressed and he will have to give not much more than a stone to anything that makes the ‘cut’. Initial reaction though is ‘doooooooooooooooh’. Other early thoughts. Home Farm looks nicely weighted on 10-6 and the aforementioned Katenko has been done no favours in being allotted as high as 11-4.
That grade one at the weekend must have been atrocious if Tidal Bay gets a 7lb allowance for coming second.
