There could be no denying Liverpool sent out a statement by dismantling Arsenal 5-1 on Saturday - but manager Brendan Rodgers insisted afterwards that there is 'still a long way to go' for his side.

The Northern Irishman oversaw one of the best Barclays Premier League displays in recent memory as the Reds pulverised the visitors, rattling them with four goals inside the first 20 minutes.

Liverpool afforded Arsenal no time to regroup throughout an encounter that was arguably as good as anything Anfield has witnessed since Nottingham Forest were hit for five in April 1988.

Martin Skrtel scored two for the first time in his Reds career, as did Raheem Sterling, while Daniel Sturridge was at his unflappable best to add his name to the score-sheet.

Rodgers hailed the manner in which his players controlled the game after flying out of the blocks to unhinge the Gunners; however, he refused to get too carried away with the stunning victory.

"We've still got a long way to go for me, in terms of where we want to go and where we want to be, but across the board it's very pleasing," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"We've got so many young players, who are still growing and developing and our squad is small. So I feel that we've still got work to do. But when we play like that and perform like that, people are obviously going to ask the question [can you win the league?].

"We're five points behind Arsenal, four behind Manchester City and six behind Chelsea and we still have them to play here at Anfield. But the main objective is just to finish as high as we possibly can and let's see where that takes us.

"Right the way through this season and throughout my time here, we've started to just chip away in our development and improve.

"It was another wonderful result for us and what was particularly pleasing was the performance. It was an incredible display from a group of young men who are growing and getting better all the time. It was very pleasing."

Rodgers fielded the same starting XI to the one which shredded Everton's ranks with a similar first-half showing in the 4-0 Merseyside derby demolition at Anfield in late January.

While the manager switched his front three around for the Arsenal visit, releasing Sturridge through the middle and playing Sterling down the left, behind them, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard picked up where they left off against the Blues.

"I think you can see we had a couple of changes," said Rodgers. "We played Daniel through the middle. Raheem has been playing a lot down the right of late, but we moved him out to the left.

"The three midfield players, their objective was to control the game and I thought our control and management of the game was exceptional. At 3-0 and 4-0, we were able to control the game. You saw just before half-time that the supporters really appreciated that.

"It was a wonderful demonstration of managing the game. It was very exciting and we're probably a wee bit disappointed that we gave away a goal, but I can't have too many reasons to be disappointed after that performance.

"Arsenal have been leading the way for most of the season and they are an excellent side, so to put in that type of performance at that level was very encouraging. I'm just very pleased for the players and it was great for the supporters."

We have got work to do - to prepare well and play well 13 more times in the league. If we do that then wherever we finished the club and players can say "we gave it a damn good go".

I wish I knew. We can't rule out him pulling some **** in the summer, like he did last time. But he does look to be really enjoying his football at the minute.

Can't see him fighting to get to another Prem club if we break top 4

My thoughts too. It will depend who comes knocking I guess. Top 4 this season and he could surprise us ... again ..... by staying.

I don't know that it is now. He really seems to be enjoying himself at the mo. CL and he just might stay. He must love the way that we're playing, most of the time.

he's right. we've not really shown prem winning form despite topping the table at christmas which was very nice.

We have a lot of work to do, thats being realistic, ambitious and honest all in one go.

I want our manager seeing clealry where we need to get to to win not imagining that where we are is good enough.

suarez? who knows. its all about who.

I think we've rewarded him to a point where we can. he's worth it to attract others and add 10 points a year min.. if we got cl and gave him 250k per week again i think it might cut the money bull out.

If real come in we are negotiating for 100mil. if city come in i think we might say no but i'd imagine a 120mil would do it... nobody else will get a sniff. (ie psg will not pay it and ar unattractive league)

get CL and another season out of him then you are looking at a 28 year old who's value will start to tail off. I cannot see these fees being paid as in 5 years he'll be done. bale was oyung after all

He's being paid very well so I don't think he would take a small wage rise to play for the likes of PSG in a ****e league. If we get CL then the only risk is Madrid or City, who we would get £100mil or £120mil from respectively.

With your far superior goal difference you are in effect 4 points clear but I agree with your overall premise! Happy times for Liverpool at long last! <ok>

  18. Luis said he wanted to play CL football which is why Arsenal interested him in the summer, this bit may be solved should we get top four (assuming we qualify if we finish fourth). However, he also said when he joined us that he wanted to play for Barca or Real one day, this bit remains open and will do whilst he remains at Liverpool.

  19. You're right, the goal difference is effectively another point and a very important point it is too as it means both Spurs and Everton are more than one result away.
