Is Chris Powell the most successful black manager in the history of the English game?

    If not, then who is?

It is an interesting point, methinks.

Chris Hughton (sic?) at Norwich also did well at Newcastle and Birmingham.

On one level, yes, it is interesting.

But on another, it's pointless, as we should judge CP not as a black manager, but simply as a manager. Which is what the vast majority of Charlton fans have done.

Err, I don't really get what you are saying, Captain B. I'm not judging him as a black man, but I am interested to know where he rates among his fellow black managers.

It is a legitimate issue to discuss, as the newspapers and think-tanks would have us believe.

I wasn't saying that you were, Ponders, just saying that, while it is an interesting debate to have (where to place him amongst all black managers), we shouldn't confuse it with the debate over whether he should still be Charlton manager.

Re your debate, I definitely think Hughton is in with a shout of the best black manager.

Fair enough, Captain B. Thank you for clearing that up.

I shouldn't think there are many folk who deem CP unsuitable due to his colour, but if there are, then may God have mercy on their wretched souls.

To be honest, I'd be happy for a trained gibbon or a Furby to lead us to glory, so colour is not really an important factor in my mind.

Vol - I find Chris Kiwomya to be an odd choice. He was largely dreadful as manager at Notts County, but I do hear he is an innovative coach, so hopefully he can resurrect his career elsewhere. He has also suffered great tragedy, which may have affected his ability to give 100% to the job.

Jean Tiguana was quite highly rated, but what has happened to him since Fulham?

Let's just hope no Blackburn fans have the misfortune to visit this site then... not sure Wince was that successful for them.

However there are at least two regulars who seem to imply that lots of people want Powell to continue as manager because of his colour.

Anyone who says that the desire to keep Powell is as a result of middle class political correctness...

No....why? Are you scared of getting caught up in the hypocrisy of your own doing..your frightened of discussing or even saying the word black, which kinda proves my point.

Your a perfect example of my point. Some people carry such a prejudice and the spectre of race comes into it they don't know what to say! You carry the prejudice not the unmentioned two...

Was that directed at me? If so, you can see above that I clearly have no problem whatsoever with using the word black.

I have stated more than once that the colour of Powell's skin has nothing to do with my judgement of and support for him.

You and Vol, on the other hand, have more than once attributed my and others' support for him to the colour of his skin. You are the ones bringing race into it.
