I'm guessing that the chance to play football regularly might be a factor here as well. At the Hammers the team will probably be built around him and he will be guaranteed a game every week, whereas he was probably going to be a backup with us next season because of competition for BA and Cabaye. No doubt he asked for assurances as to his role with us and didn't like what he heard.

As he hasn't had to take a pay cut and got the extra two years on his contract that he wanted it makes some sense in a way.

But dropping down to the championship again? Guessing again that he will feel more comfortable at that level because I can't understand why any ambitious and self respecting professional would want to play at a level below their capacity out of choice!

I've always mantained that they are so removed from reality that it would be hard to relate to them. I was engaged to a very rich woman earlier in my life and she had no comprehension of the realities and real value of money. It is a completely different world they live in!

I'm sorry, but I implore any one of you calling him greedy to find me a shred of proof in these 'new contract' rumours.

They reckon we offered him MORE money to stay for LONGER...Give you ****ing head a shake man:

    1) We have a supposed wage-cap of £50k, so why would we potentially offer a 32 year old £55k?

    2) He said over and over and over again that he wanted to become a legend - why would the sake of £5k bother him in that regard?

    3) He said his family loved it here and he could genuinely see himself living here after he retired, again, why would £5k bother him in that regard?

Face it man, the lad was offered a long term contract by a club who want to build around him, whilst he was essentially being pushed to the fringes of the first team by a club who've made it clear they want young, cheap potential!

Nolan, you ARE a legend in my eyes and I would happily ply you with beer if ever you venture up this way again!

Do you seriously think it's about money? The man was offered a good deal with us IF (IF!!!) we finished in the top 7 in the next two years. Maybe not a ridiculously hard thing to do but a tough one and when you are coming towards the end of your career and do have kids to support you want to have the comfort of knowing you're wanted and that your club aren't only in you for the money.

It all comes down to Maslow's hierarchy of needs and we weren't fulfilling them

Because he is really going to struggle if he doesn't get that job security issue sorted...! The man could stop being paid today, never get another job and still never have to worry about his family not being looked after.

Not an excuse IMO, if he loved the club, he could have stayed. Just like Carroll.

I liked the guy when he was here, good character and did the business on the pitch. But FFS man, you don't have to cover for the guy like that. He's just like the vast majority of sports stars - a mercenary. Not like Super Shola!

Common People by Pulp was actually very correct.

"I said pretend you've got no money, she just laughed and said you're so funny"

Ex-girlfriends father owned a very successful gas exploration company... Her first car was a brand new Lotus Elan. I thank her father for adding me as a named driver and she had so many points on her license by the time we'd spilt up :)

The offer was 40k, with a 10k increase IF we finished 7th but it wouldn't of come into effect until the end of next season. He didn't need a new contract, he had 2 years remaining. And he REFUSED the new offer. Thats the key point here, he REFUSED to sign the new deal. He asked for it and refused it. What more do you expect the club to do? Why should it stay on the table?

Of course it is. He wanted a contract with as many years as possible on 50k/55k per week. He didn't want to run the risk of his contract running out with us when he's 32, and then either not being able to sign another one, or only being able to get one for far less wages. This way, he's guaranteed a bumper salary well into retirement age.

He knows he has no pace and his fitness is poor already, so he probably knows that he won't be so great when he's pushing 32 and 33.

As I say the contract we offered was incestive based to achieve things, the one at West Ham is to just turn up for the next 5 years!!!!

I lived with my ex in her £1.3m home. She also had homes in Switzerland and the US and effectively retired in her late twenties although actually had never had to work at all. On one occasion she decided she wanted a new house, bought it and then changed her mind the following day and sold it to another interested party who hadn't been able to meet the asking price. She lost £80,000 on the deal (more than £100k with legal fees) and she was less concerned at the loss than I would have been at getting a parking ticket. I spent my entire savings during the relationship just as a result of having to attempt to contribute to the lifestyle. She paid the gardeners more than I earnt in a year. Its a very very different world and i'm actually glad i'm no longer involved in it ... although that might seem a strange thing to say.

I think that this is a major factor in his decision. Pardew has already said (about a month ago) that he wants HBA to play in the role that Nolan filled last season, playing just off ther main striker. This is the position from which Nolan scored most of his goals supporting Andy Carroll.

HBA being given this postion means that Nolan would have had to play in central midfield.

Assuming that Tiote is one of the first names on the teamsheet, this would have left him fighting younger and quicker players for a role in the team that most of us would accept that he is not best suited to nowadays.

Most of the formation porn that I have seen on this site regarding next season's team did not include Nolan, so maybe Pardew felt the same way?

That speaks volumes to me. Either way it's an easy salary, 55k a week and nobody will give a ****.
