French Tickler i think thats what the authorities wanted was to run football into the ground, at this time the miners had been crushed by force, football grounds were old and most in a bad state of affair, however the birth of the yuppies and 'loadsofmoney' came into effect, but none of the new rich were buying into football, why was that?. My theory is like many cities and towns across the country they were let to go to rack and ruin and then sold off cheaply to developers(after a nice little bung) which created 'Boom Britain', all the strings were being pulled by Thatchers advisors and while football was at its lowest ebb along came Sky tv which in no time at all had forced the British public to pay for football on tv. All seater stadiums were engineered by that government and lives were loss because safety was put to the back burner.
I think you flatter Maggie, I don't think she had a clue about anything football related and most of the grounds at that time are still exactly where they were.
The plans to move stadiums were in place OLM, you are right Maggie didn't have a clue about anything football related she had her lapdog Colin Moynihan to help run football into the ground.
In 1981, when we were being lifted off our feet and struggling for breath, some of us had the sense to climb the fences. Not as easy as it sounds. You have to climb up to were the fences incline inwards. If you were able to do that and pull yourself over the fence, you were met by police officers trying to hit you with truncheons and threatening to arrest/eject you. Stewards who were not prepared to open the door size gates. Needless to say we ignored them. True, some police and stewards ended up injured but we got the gates open and people poured out in an orderly fashion. If you ever do see the youtube clips you will see thousands of spurs fans sat on the side of the pitch for the duration of the game. What a pity they did not learn a lesson from that day.
Is that not why all the cover ups started? The police thought there was going to be trouble so they let everyone in!
I disagree that the police are totally to blame. Yes in hindsight they made mistakes to open the gate and yes it is disgraceful the police tried to cover up the truth! It seems the police are damned if they do, damned if they dont. If they didnt open the gate they risked thousands of liverpool fans rioting after being refused entry. they did open the gate and the disaster occured. How were the police to know what would happen if the gate was opened? Too many tickets were sold for the game, the stadium wasnt safe, and in hindsight the police made mistakes!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25947994 Honour to our fans who taunted these murderers when we last went there.
Bit over the top. Some of those coppers at Hillsborough for that match V city would've been nippers, maybe not even born then at the time of the disaster. Can't tarnish them for the mistakes of a generation previous.
And some of them were on duty that day or have since covered up for their colleagues. Have their been any whistleblowers from the SYP? Or just a conspiracy of silence and 'early retirements'?
To keep this thread on topic... Yes, there is a Heysel memorial at Anfield. (You've finally got an answer over a year after you asked the question) Tosser.
This does not surprise me at all. All those in charge back then should be rotting in prison now not enjoying there nice pensions and freedom.
