    BBC Sport's Ben Smith
    Newcastle update

"Newcastle's bid for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier has stalled and there is no sign that the clubs are prepared to restart talks. At this stage, no other arrivals are expected at St James' Park before tonight's deadline."

I dare them to sell Benny, then get a poor result in the derby.

But what would change, though? Nothing.

So much money we should have for transfers, even the likes of west ham are bringing in no less than 6 players.

Absolutely disgusted with the way our club is run, Just because safety is certain we have reached our goal and fat mike doesn't see the need to invest any money.

Please I dream of a new owner to come and buy us, show some ambition. Surely we are an appealing prospect? Big crowd with loyal support and good income.

What would change is more abuse at st James park.

I can't say what's going on behind the scenes but Alan Pardew must have no back bone, surely he should be demanding reinforcements? But no probably towing the line doing what he's told

You should stop after word nine. You can't say what's going on behind the scenes, so second guessing with negativity is pointless. You MUST know what the club is about, why did we change just because Jim White's on the telly?

I hate to say it, but for the first time ever I've felt ambivalent about whether to want Newcastle to win or not this season. It seems that a string of wins will only prolong the pointless and corrupt regime we currently have.

They're taking the piss, but most fans seem happy with that.

Or maybe some fans are loyal and stick by their team as like the westwood, Mckeag days. They will be gone and we will be here and by the way 8th top is better than other places we have been.

A lot on here do not know what **** times are

If we win tomorrow everyone on here will be thinking that the window isn't a disaster and that a top half finish, a share of the bragging rights with Sunderland (1 win each) and with money in the bank for the summer people will be positive.

Should we draw, or even lose tomorrow people need to maintain perspective. It will hurt, but it's one game. We can't let two games against Sunderland determine whether a season is successful or not. Our aim is top 10 and we're well on course for that. Next season our aim should be top 8, and thereafter it should always be top 8 with a view to pushing for top 6. It's a slow progression to get where we want to be. We've only been back in the league for three years. West brom came up with us and would anyone trade squads or places with them???

People are up in arms at the moment but nobody knows what will happen in the summer. If we get Remy, De Jong, Grenier and Cabella then everyone will be delighted. It's disappointing, it's frustrating and there is a sense of being here before under this regime but the time to judge, and I mean really judge is September 1st 2014.

If by that date we don't have at least three decent strikers on our books (two permanent), a replacement for Cabaye and one other player then I'd say that's the time for people to be deciding on whether to renew season tickets, buy club shirts etc. For now we're on target to meet our objectives. Yes we're a little thin on the ground in areas but given our league position we can afford to be.

I just pray for a result tomorrow because If not I can sense all hell will break loose.

    Exactly.

And in terms of all hell breaking loose, it would only be for 48 hours, then apathy, then excitement at another game. That's all football really is - an endless series of games.

I'd disagree with the last point fella.
Most fans aren't happy it's just that they realise we aint gonna change things and we can either constantly get wound up about it or accept that we will have to put up with it for the short to mid term at least.
    I'm in this camp tbh.

We are getting ****ed over by Ashely make no mistake.Fans don't want Stella signings just a bit of sqaud back up.The club is the ultimate cash cow and the plan this season has been executed to perfection. No threat of relegation no cup runs to stretch the squad and a good player sold for good money....this is Ashleys dream scenario and if he can carry it out for the next ten years he is laughing.Money in the bank, loan paid back and ****ing us fans off.....As long as he is running the show we have zero ambition and some fans I know ,good loyal hard core have had enough because what's the point?

Oh, for the love of pete....

...it's not and cannot be a cashcow when the fcking thing OWES him £230m!!.....

........it still costs to keep the club in the Premier League, ffs.......

......our squad is stronger now than it has been for 10 years......

......we have six clubs ahead of us in the league who will ALWAYS be richer in both financial and historical terms, please, please, please come to terms with this fact.....

.....your issue of apathy and not being able to compete is NOT Ashley's fault; it is the "fault" of Sky, Roman Abramovic, Capitalism, Rupert Murdoch, and so on and so forth - your only escape to 'compete' will be in NUFC being sold to someone with an infinite pot of cash, or at least the means to operate at a substantial loss every, single season.

**** times are not only poor seasons but also seasons where there's no hope.

Where is the hope that something will come of anything? There's no push for the top five, there's certainly no hope in a cup run ever been shown. So what's the point then? That to me is ****.

I can't say what's going on behind the scenes but I think Alan Pardew must have fallen asleep in some jelly mix and has spent the rest of the day trying to remove his face from the dessert that has now set around his face. Mike Ashley was due to have this for his pudding after tea so they can't just yank his head out or else it will leave a big handsome face-shaped hole in it and MA will know someone's messed up. I can't say for certain but I imagine Joe Kinnear and the rest of the backroom staff have been too busy trying to carefully remove the jelly whilst keeping it's structural integrity to be bidding for players.

I don't know about you but I think the well-being of our manager is more important than a few panic buys.

It's as good an assumption as any I've seen.
