Just to play devil's advocate, I thought I would highlight some of reasons, why we should not even sign this player. With the lack cover for Giroud and now our potential problems in CM, is Draxler really the solution? There is even the argument to say that we need another CB more than we need an another attacking midfielder. Draxler is clearly a huge talent, but he is not even fully fit at the moment, so would not come and slot straight into the team in our time of need. Or, is this bit like the Ozil situation, in that when a player of this talent becomes available, you have to sign him?
If Wenger thinks that a player of that talent can be converted into a forward, then we need to get him now while we can. It's building for the future.
A lot of sauces have said that Wenger's been after him for a while so it might just be a case of trying to get it sorted now before the usual vultures start circling
His talent says sign him up now. He can also play just behind the striker in a Bergkamp-esque number ten role as well as on the left. I think he'd give us another dynamic in attack and whilst I know he's injured at the moment, he's due back soon. If we don't sign him now then I think he's going to get snapped up for mega bucks in the summer. I'm glad we're trying to steal a march on him now.
Ketchup or brown? And to answer the OP... absurd question. Of course we should buy him. I'm sure a certain poster could come up with a reason for not needing him, probably involving Bendtner having the ability to 'surprise us'...
Not really that absurd. Draxler is not even a centre forward, so can't cover for Giroud. He can be converted in the long term, but I doubt Wenger is going to start the process now, especially with the games we have, if we sign him. Draxler would probably play from the left, where we have the likes Cazorla,Podolski,Rosicky and Chamberlain.
I think he could quite easily cover for Giroud. Just as well as Bendtner or Podolski anyway. And he'd get better and better at it anyway.
Quite easily? How many times has he played as the lone CF for Schalke then? Answer is, zero. Has always played from the left and the other position he has played in was the Ozil position. To say he can easily cover a position that he is never played in for a new club and in a new league is stretching it a bit.
Personally, I do not think he is what we need..... Do we have the time in today's football to convert a player. Fans, these days have no patience, people talk about Henry or dare I say RvP and how they were successfully converted to Centre forwards, but what they forget to mention is the amount of time it took them. Would they be afforded the time, it is bad enough getting a prolific striker from a different league and getting him to adapt to the pace of the premier league without the added complication of getting a player from a different league and trying to get them converted! Giroud was given a few games before fans began to jump on his back.
A guy with class and someone Wenger thinks fits his future plans, of course. Why wait? Get it over with and start incorporating him into the team, who knows if we get him he might just make a significant impact in the second half of our season.
i dont seem to remember Henry spending too much time standing in the middle, he seemed to stand on the wing and move in towards the centre when play was being developed, so as to stretch opposition defences. to do so you need real speed and timing. Walcott fits the bill, and perhaps AW has seen it in Draxler.
Half of Germany seems to be saying this lad is their future, so I'm of the view that if you get the chance to buy his services you snap him up. How long he takes to adapt to a CF role is debatable but I'd rather have the player wearing our colours than lining up against us....
I like him, but he'd not worth £37 million, so we shouldn't sign him. We need to sort out the striking issues, that's the weak link, we have plenty of "not a winger, yet not a striker, not a CAM" types of player, do we really need to shell out £37 mil for a position we're already stacked in?
question is, should we sign him now for £37 million, or wait a few years and not be able to sign him because City, Real and PSG are offering £100 million. Most people seem to think he will be that good, so he's definitely worth the investment.
That's good news! Rumours are 25ish m with loads of add-ons for appearances, goals, national team appearances, no doubt trophies too. Means in the end he could cost a LOT & Schalke will in effect keep getting paid for him, but there's less of an initial outlay, and less risk in case he's not as good as we hope
