I have been to Auschwitz twice and a couple of smaller camps, and I still feel a chill when I remember those storerooms. The sight of all that hair, much of plaited or braided with ribbons, has etched itself on my mind. There can be no doubt that misery and murder took place at an extraordinary scale. The six million figure may or may not be correct, but it is definitely over three million. It is quite certain that there was not six million Jews living in Europe during the 1940s, yet this figure could easily have been met with the addition of gypsies, the mentally impaired, and anyone of a darker complexion. There are facts that suggest the number has been vastly exaggerated, yet the Holocaust did happen on a monstrous scale. And we must never forget it.
