I do not think your defence and CM are much better than United 's. "Are being addressed' as will be if the right players can be bought. At least he has recognised it which is the first step..
Both are young, prone for some awesome stops but some mistakes. For their ages they are really young in the GK world. Just wish our CB's would be fit so we could have a pairing that stays the same, same with the LB as ENrique when on is a beast.
I agree, however I wouldn't call it a gamble to invest. I'd call it a gamble not to invest. Gambling on United's bad form to continue so we get 4th &/or Suarez staying &/or Suarez's money buying great talent &/or our middling/young players hatching into superstars.
If FSG are serious about getting top 4 and keeping Suarez (when you've got a player that good, you do everything you can to keep and build around him) then they have to invest into keeping 4th spot this season because there are huge weaknesses in our team right now, never mind the injury list. The money invested would be returned by being in the CL for the most part and if we fail to make it, sell Suarez to recoup the loss because he'd be off anyway. If they're happy to continue with the long term goal, then I'm not sure they've got the right idea. This is our best shot, right now. If we finish 5th and say United 4th, then they'll spend more in order to climb higher with the CL funds whilst we would lose Suarez (most likely) and not have as much money to invest. The Suarez money could well end up like the Spuds found after Bale; a mess of talent with no clear direction, no time to gel and no clear first XI and just push us back again. Whilst the others are weaker, we need to make our move. I'll always support Liverpool, regardless of position or division, and I certainly DO NOT want some rich twat to come in and buy us success like the Chavs or City.

Unfortunately, business people are hot for 70 mil to spend and soon forget losing their superasset, refusing to see that Tottenham's scenario is the norm, and not the badly managed exception they think it is. So, FSG might be thinking: "Let's not panic, hopefully we just manage to beat United and Spurs to 4th. If not, no worries: we continue to cautiously build around Suarez if he stays, or else we splash out if he goes. In this way, we never go into red, and invest sensibly." IMO, that line of thinking is risky in a few places: Firstly, as things stand on paper chances are only 33% to reach 4th, split equally between Spurs and United. For us to get 4th with what we have, we'd need Suarez & Sturridge to maintain their insane forms, and Gerrard or whoever manage to hold down in the middle. Secondly, if we don't get 4th and Suarez stays, will he have an undented motivation after failing to reach 4th?, will there be a hurtin saga?, will United bounce back and be harder to overtake despite Luis in the team? Thirdly, the Tottenham scenario that you suggested could afflict us next season with Suarez gone, and with the added challenge of facing a strengthened United. So, rather, we invest and "gamble" now.
Livtor. Everton might bristle about you giving us, spuds and scum each 33% chance of top 4. This is a 4 way battle and Everton may be least favoured of the 4 but are still right in there.
