They've released a video now. It looks like they have a stepped nose, maybe similar to Ferrari.
Matt Somerfield ‏@SomersF1 4m I think the @MercedesAMGF1 #W05 could be a cross between the F14T and MP4-29 based on the step chassis and sculpting .......... around the Nose cameras meaning it not only drops away rearward from the bulkhead but has a tapered central section please log in to view this image .....patience.....running....out please log in to view this image
What are those two horns on the nose? Surely they aren't some weird looping way to attach the front wing?
I don't think so, DHC. They're far too high and also too far back. More likely ducting of air from what is probably a Ferrari-like front end; but who knows? Aesthetically, I don't like the steep step at all and agree with EMSC that once again, the McLaren wins the beauty contest.
Camera mounts are a possibility. However, the regulations are such that they are not allowed to generate downforce. Cameras have top and bottom surfaces of identical curvature, thus eliminating the differences in pressure which create 'downforce', and must be mounted precisely horizontally.
Could they be ducts from the nose channeling air to the brakes?? Just a random thought, is that allowed?
This. The FIA have changed the regs so they have to be situated just in front of the front suspension. If you have a nose which falls sharply they have to sprout up to be high enough, it's the same on the Ferrari: please log in to view this image Looks like the Merc's nose drops even more dramatically than the Ferrari's. It's going to be ****ing horrible. I really hope Red Bull haven't gone for this.
If the top 3 teams all have gone for this result then it would suggest it is the best solution, so maybe Ferrari don't look in such a bad shapte after all.
Yeah they are camera pods after all, I agree this seems to be the trend between the top end of the field. Maybe the latter part will consist of penis noses. And Lotus somewhere inbetween.
