Oh yes, I remember Mr. Steele, don´t think I ever saw him live though, because I had left the country soon after he joined the club, but do remember the name.
After football he ran the Ironmonger's Arms in Pottergate. That's where I know him from though Maestro will never believe that!
I remember him but he didn't get many games from my recall - probably more than poor old Becchio though
Remember the name, but can't say he sticks in my memory. I trust he was a better footballer than singer!!!!
To qualify as an old fogey I'd say you have to remember City players from the immediate post-war years at the latest, certainly not players from the 1970s like Billy Steele! Even then you are pushing it. Try calling a 70-something an old fogey and see what the reaction is .......
I remember him. He was always described as an up and coming youngster. When ever my mates and I talked football that was the nick name he was stuck with.
That's where I also know him from, we used to play cricket against the Ironmongers, bloody cheating bunch as I remember ! Always took **** loads of beer to match's there players marked there field positions with a can ! Drinks breaks were not squash either?
Lovely old building - shame about the beer. I never used the place very much but there was a spell in the late 70's/early 80's when the Shrub House was my watering hole and the Ironmongers put Directors on handpump amongst all the keg beers. I called in very occasionally on the way to the Shrub but they really had no idea how to keep cask ale and it was usually in poor condition. Why did I ever go in - I can't be the only old codger who remembers the barmaids and the length of the skirts they were trying to wear!! If my memory serves me correctly they had a very short spell when Saturday night was topless barmaid night but the Council and the Police soon put a stop to that. I never went - a step too far for me. After a couple of years the handpump was taken out and I stopped going in. I went in again a couple of times in the 90's to meet a business acquaintance and Billy Steele was running it then although he seemed to be a landlord who spent most of his time the wrong side of the bar. I seem to think that when Billy left they tried to turn it into a yuppy pub without success and after a series of name changes eventually closed and has been converted into a shop and a restaurant although I must admit that I haven't been down that way for a long while.
Typical cowardly keyboard warrior hurling abuse from the safety of cyber space. You wouldn't dare otherwise.
Nah, he'll have had his medical and be dining out in Paris tonight! As for midfielders from the 70's, Martin Peters is the one I'll always remember: http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/news...world_cup_hero_to_return_to_norfolk_1_3256413 People forget that he played 5 years at City, longer than he did for either Spurs or West Ham. How we could use him now!
