Sir Alex Ferguson had a key role to play in Manchester United’s signing of Juan Mata, according to journalist Bill Bradshaw who’s been speaking with Sky Sports News Radio.

That doesn't surprise me, like Moyes could pull something like that off on his own <laugh>

"The window is not closed yet so we haven't given up on him, no," Rodgers told BBC Sport.

Rodgers's side advanced into the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth and Liverpool's manager says he is still hopeful of adding to his squad before the end of the January transfer window.

"Salah was a player we're interested in and we hoped we could do a deal but as of yet there is nothing done on it," he added.

"The club is still looking for players we can bring in to strengthen the squad.

"It is a difficult market in January so we'll see what happens. If nothing comes in then the players I have have been outstanding for me this season and we'll enter into the final part of it with confidence if we have the same group of players."

We don't need him, we need a central midfielder. <grr>

It's a bizarre statement from BR that.

I just can't imagine why the hell he's said it. If they are still "working on it" then do just that but by telling everyone when he's obviously going to end up on the chavs bench anyway is just weird.

It may well be that Jan is a difficult time to buy but shouldn't we expect the "transfer committee" to be able to cope with difficult situations and overcome those difficulties? We should have money to spend and it's not like the Jan window is a surprise, it happens every bloody season <laugh>

It caught me out.

I get the feeling that he wasn't actually thinking about Salah at all but another target that we have not yet managed to buy. As Billy said on another thread, the rest of the statement reads as though he was talking through gritted teeth.

SAF's recent tv interviews were quite 'managerial', obviously he emphasised that he's only at the games as a spectator but his prior comments were like manager speak, so it doesn't surprise me that he's still helping with transfer negotiations, I wonder if there's increased activity for him with the players too.

The rags reckon we offered £13.5m for Salah, with extra's if he played a certain amount of games, etc bringing it up to £18.5m. Chelsea have allegedly offered £20m cash.

I know he is supposed to be a decent player with great potential, but surely worth no more than £10m, plus maybe a bit in add on's if he proves himself.

Typical winter window inflation / desperation.

£20m is cheap for a Chelsea player who never gets a game <laugh>

Some idiots think United are monitoring Glen Johnson's contract situation.

Dont worry guys, we're not, why would we ever consider him <laugh>

Some idiots don't appear to actually watch the game they report on.
Crooks even had Glen in his team of the week recently when he hasn't had a good game all season.

Still good enough for you lot, though. :)
