Daniel Sturridge - How good can he become?

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by Magic Ted, Jan 26, 2014.

?

How do you see Sturridge progressing?

  1. Early peek, will be a strong squad player.

  2. Good player but will eventually fall away.

  3. Avoid injuries and he'll get even better.

  4. One of the PL's best players

  5. An established name in world football

I'll start of by saying that when we were first linked with Daniel I was not at all excited. The little I had watched of him he seemed like the sort of player who thinks he's actually better than he is, pair that with the reports of attitude problems and 'velcro boots' I wasn't overly optimistic in terms of what he could achieve in the red shirt.

But I'll hold my hands up now and say that I couldn't of been more wrong. I think a lot of people outside of Chelsea and Liverpool haven't really grasped what a wonderful player he really is, and if we can keep him fit he could well replace Suarez when he buggers off. He reminds me so much of Torres in his prime. That acceleration when he bursts past a defender, the vision and calmness when faced one-on-one with the keeper and his ability when running towards goal. But without all the fancy tricks and flicks he has an amazing football brain, the little lobs and awareness of what's around him.. Let's be honest, not many players are on the same wave length as Suarez, but Sturridge is and that's why it's such a potent partnership.

Daniel is 24, typically a strikers prime ranges between the ages of 27 and 30.. So my question is how far can he go as a player and with us? Is he going to be one of them players who are hampered by injuries their whole career and never really hit the heights that they should of, has he peaked early or is there still more to come from him?

Can't wait to see what the future holds for him.

cant argue with his scoring record. Still needs to pass more rather than trying shots that aren't on. I'd put him in the category of brilliant but often frustrating. Best English striker in the league

He's already very good and is showing what a good finisher he is. I've mentioned a few times that his all round game is very good.

His injuries are a problem. As good as he is if he spends a third of every season on the treatment table his effectiveness for us is reduced massively. Seems like another one who's made of glass. Plus you can't argue with his goals tally but it would be nice if after scoring his customary goal he didn't sleep the rest of the game <whistle> (mad that he hasn't scored more than one in a league game all season).

    None of your options.

"Will remain a quality first teamer" I would say.

One of the PL's best players

Even with the injuriy he is joint 3rd scorer in the PL behind Suarez and Aguero.

I think his selfishness holds him back from moving up a level towards Suarez' class, perhaps when he learns to turn the arrogance into being more of a team player then his value to Liverpool and England will soar

To us Sturride can be up there with Rush and Fowler.

In a way every striker needs that arrogance. I do think though that in his case it has been exaggerated, he does have a fair few assists to his name since his arrival and he's very well spoken in his interviews.

On the subject of his injuries, he does seem to be made of glass. BUT, Rodgers has praised him for his unusual recovering abilities.. Little nigglers will wear you down, but to be fair to Sturridge, he has 3 in 3 since his return and he started the season with a pre-season.. 70% Sturridge is still lethal.

I just think he needs to keep his composure when things are going against him, that to my eye is what is currently holding him bak.

    that's a ruddy bold statement.

he gets to their level we will have some player, but nowhere near it yet.

Don't think he is overall selfish. There was a moment yesterday, one of the Bournemouth players was on the ball just inside our half, Flanno was dallying and hesitating about putting the tackle in, in comes Sturridge, he's seen Suarez is making a run so we need the ball now, he goes in strong, wins the ball and puts Luis through showing the youngster Flanno how it's done.

Bold yes. But he's score at the right rate and has been since day one.

Thing is Sturridge is the sort of striker who can only reach his full potential when the conditions are totally right for him, the manager is putting an arm around him, he feels appreciated by the team and fans blah blah blah, soon as that is thrown out of whack we could have a problem.

Hopefully he'll keep banging them in at his current rate and remain under the radar of the other clubs in Europe who don't think he's good enough. One of the best strikers in the league but not regarded as so (despite his goals per game) and I'm fine with that.

A good squad player like most English players.

He may get more game time to make a up a quota but I feel this is his 'best' season and he will never top it.

However, Suarez leaving may allow him far more game time and the chance to establish himself as a good first teamer. He'll never carry Liverpool to the heights you want though.

Many many English strikers hve had similar said about them during their careers, they all have that one great season which blows the hype out of proportion. This is Sturridges.

Great theory <ok> Allow me to pick the obvious holes in it:

    1. No evidence to suggest this will be his peak season.

    2. He's already proved better than just a squad player (10 from 14 for us in the league last season and 11 from 14 this season).

    3. Suarez being here hasn't limited his game time one iota.

    4. Many English strikers have had more than one great season.

    5. You're a manc (and a piss poor wum) <doh>

He needs to calm down, at this rate he'll burn out like Tobes if he keeps trying to fight impossible battles out of #bitter hatred for Liverpool <ok>

UIR you can tell from your post that you haven't seen him play much or even at all for us.
