Even if you are basing it on goals, the last 5-6 games of the season when Madrid were well beaten, there task, as admitted by a number of their players was to assist Ronaldo as many times as possible to get him the Golden Boot.

Ronaldo is a great player, but unfortunately for him he is in the same era as potentially the best footballer of all time. A bit like Manchester United at the minute, in this Barcelona era. No shame..

Yes, come on his ability is unquestionable. The lad is something very very special and we're blessed to be witnessing him play. Football wise Xavi and Iniesta are the boys but ability wise, Messi is on another planet. He does things with his feet many can't even think about doing.

Top player, he'll go down as the best when he finishes.

At times United have played **** and Ronaldo has single handedly won games for us. Fulham a few years back for example.

    Messi hasnt.

And Ronaldo has been worlds above Messi for portugal, hes actually played very well at times. Recently hes been rubbish though.

The fact remains, Messi is nowhere near as good as people make out without the best side in the world around him where as Ronaldo has stood out when the players around him frankly have not been arsed.

The fact that there is even a debate is credible to both players. I, for one, couldn't tell you which is better, which is better for a team or individually. If someone offered me both players (same price, same wage) i would probably go for Ronaldo as he seems more of an entertainer than messi, with the backheels, flicks and all that. Actually I love to watch Messi look as if he's going to fall as he weaves his way in and out of defenders... **** its hard to choose!

It isn't, they beat Spain 4-1 in a friendly last year. It is also a myth that Messi and Argentina were poor at the world cup, if you remember before their loss to Germnay Messi was regarded as being the 2nd best player of the tournament after Villa and they were scoring loads of goals. However Maradonna then got over-confident and put a team with no balance against Germany who ripped them to shreds. Since then they have improved a lot, Tevez can't even get in the side now!

    OP

Messi is better than Ronaldo because football is a team game, not just about who scores the most goals. RM's whole attack was built around Ronaldo scoring, when the other players had good opportunities to shoot they would pass to him even if it would reduce the chances of scoring!

I was thinking Portugal has a much better team than Argentina.

Then I started thinking of Argentine players.

They have an abundance of world class/ very good defensive mids; Cambiasso, Mascherano, Zanetti, Banega, Gago,
They have an abundance of world class strikers; Messi, Tevez, Aguero, Lisandro, Higuian, Milito, Lavezzi, Zarate.

Very unbalanced, but their strength lies in attack so that is what they should do.

If I was coach I would play Messi, yes in his less effective, wide left role, coz they lack world class wingers.

If it was a question 'Who do you want more in the United line up?' I would go for Ronaldo, because he is proven to work in English football. I can't say who is better. You never can, because the situation can never be the same, so the challenge is different and thus for cannot be compared. But they are both great players.

Ronaldo gets on my nerves with the way it always has to be about him. Would prefer Ozil if i had a choice.

In all honesty it isn't much of a contest, lol. Messi hands down.

Messi did to Carvalho & Co Ronnie couldn't do to Pique.

Defensively, imo, Real Madrid are better than Barcelona.

One thing is for sure, I'd like to play with Messi rather than Ronaldo.

Messi passes it to his team mates
Messi doesnt dive (as much) if at all

    messi scores more goals
    messi wins more title
    messi wins more european cups
    messi is younger
messi top scorer in europe once again
messi doesnt take all freekicks and penalties like ronaldo

messi will acheive far more and score far more than ronaldo ever will

no contest for me, messi is in maradona and pele's bracket, ronaldo is only in beckham, zidane and figo bracket

I've watched many Barcelona and Real Madrid games this year and Messi is definitely the best in the world. I appreciate Ronaldo and was a huge fan when he was at United, but Messi is something else entirely. The speed at which he changes direction is truly incredible and, although he doesn't do the tricks often, can go past five or six players in one run. I personally categorize Messi and Ronaldo as the world's only two elite players, but Messi is the better of the two.

Wakkalfc.....Anyone who puts David Beckham alongside the likes of Zidane and Ronaldo knows nothing about football. Beckham was a quality player, but he was highly overrated, mainly because of his celebrity lifestyle and good looks. But footballing wise he is not fit to lace the boots of Zidane or Ronaldo!

Onto the subject in hand, Messi is a fantastic player but I just feel Ronaldo is the more complete player, he is lethal from free kicks, and he is so effective in the air, this is why he scores more than Messi. Messi is outstanding in open play but I don't think ge offers the same overall goal threat as Ronaldo!

If Ronaldo switched places with Messi and was in that Barca side everyone would be saying Ronaldo was the better player hands down, and the gap between goals in a season would be closer to 20 rather than 10

And yet no one can explain why Real outscored Barca in La LIga last year AND Messi scored a greater proportion of Barca's goals than Ronaldo scored of Real's. I'll tell you why they scored more though. It's because Barca play keep ball for a lot of the game, waiting for the opposition to make a mistake and then punish them. Whereas Real go looking for more and more goals and tend to create more chances than Barca in a typical game. Which is one of the reasons as to why Ronaldo had nearly twice as many shots as Messi, the other main reason being that he is far more selfish. Ronaldo is also the "go to guy" at Real, which was pointed out earlier and most of their attacks are directed towards him. At Barca, Pedro seems to be the guy who gets on the end of a lot of chances.
