We moan about paying £8.5M for RvW and him not scoring, but at least from Saturday's evidence, he 'put a shift in'. I was most unimpressed when we played Saints by Osvaldo's contribution (they paid a rumoured £15M for him) and yes, he has scored a wonder goal, but now there has been a training ground incident and he has been suspended by the club as a result. Read all about it - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25859916.
Based on his previous conduct he's probably decked a team mate, most likely after they reminded him how crap he's been. I'm happy with RVW, he showed some real progress, hard work and quality against Hull. I think he will get scoring soon, he's got a great attitude as well and really wants to contribute anyway he can.
Even playing in the midfield. He seemed to be the only one who wanted to get on the ball against Fulham. It would have been nice if he was able to do it further up the pitch!
rvw will be decent if we get the supply correct osvaldo was rumoured to be feisty when he joined, and he's just proven that correct. saints fans on their page are not happy
Yeah he was expensive and hasn't looked great. I agree with Fenland - very happy with RvW and I'm minded to be patient. I don't know what is going on at Southampton - they look close to imploding. First the owner-director of football incident and questions over whether Pochettino would continue, then questions over a mass exodus of players for profit, then there have been a couple of major injuries very recently (although admittedly they have been extremely fortunate to have had very few injuries up until this stage, which has played a huge part in their early season success) and now this. I don't for a moment think they will be dragged into a relegation battle. In fact, looking at the relegation candidates, I suspect Southampton really only need one more win or so to be safe. However, it will be really annoying if they start dropping points to our rivals - they play Fulham, Stoke, Hull, West Ham and Crystal Palace in the eight or so games before us. Ideally they will at least get draws in these matches (admittedly their form has not been bad recently) because I can't see us getting more than a draw at theirs, if at all.
A couple of fans have said they're not impressed with RvW, but I agree with Rob and Fenland - he needs time and SERVICE, then I'm sure he will get goals.
Fonte supposed to be involved in the Osvaldo affair too, although seemingly not the guilty party. Osvaldo told to stay away from the club for two weeks is pretty serious.
On top of his three match ban too. Looking at his record, sounds like Osvaldo has been known as a liability. He also obviously really struggles with injuries because while his goal return is good, he rarely seems to have finished a full season. Not sure how the fee of £13m-£15m was justified.
Now being reported that there was a fight between the two, instigated by Osvaldo, that left Fonte bleeding but not seriously hurt.
I think RvW will come good - he is adapting and taking longer than we wanted, but did you see his expression when he was subbed last game? He looked gutted - he really wants it to click and I think it will come, though perhaps not 'til late this season. Of what I've read of him he comes across as someone serious about improving and I kind of hope that someone else comes in who is more expensive than him to take the pressure off a bit. Mind you, I want whoever that is to hit the ground running please!
