I don't know where you got this from.I used to work in the fishing industry for a trawler company. In the late 60's over half the fish caught went to make fishmeal fertiliser and pet food.we sent a train load every day from Lowstoft to the factory at Grimsby.I would very much doubt that we now have 7% of the fish in our waters.

People like him have much to say but nothing to back it up with.

The word for his kind is "insignificnut".

To the land of nod for me.

Things would of changed since the sixties though. I am surprised by your revelation of half the fish are made into fishmeal fertiliser and pet food but I believe it. The 70% figure came up in a political debate and wasn't challenged by the opposition so I was confident in it's credibility but I will look into it myself.

I'd consider myself Libertarian (or somewhat pushing in the Classical Liberal direction at least) and under the auspices of Libertarianism I believe in market forces in government, where the citizens of the EU are free to choose between the other 26 states depending on who provides the better government. I'm not stupid enough to believe that market forces are appropriate in all walks of life (for instance market forces don't work so well in health, where sick people are customers - and therefore sickness is desirable), but in terms of economy and the liberty of the citizen I don't think you will find a better living model of a Libertarian system than that of the current EU. For example, France decided to push the personal income tax up to 75% for the highest earners - people immediately moved to Belgium. The citizen within the EU is no longer the property of the state - each state must behave itself because every other state is waiting to nick the brightest and best citizens, as France is finding out.

Of course that's not to say the likes of UKIP don't have a point about faceless quangos within the EU running things, and the fact that the EU seems to be on a power-grab. My two biggest personal fears for the EU are Britain / Ireland withdrawing, or harmonisation of government policies across the EU. If Britain withdraws from the EU then we are stuck with a British monopoly on power over the citizen - if the EU continues to push for harmonisation of everything (outside of its initial mandate of fair rules on trade and free movement of citizens) then a super-Government in Brussel will gain a monopoly on power over the citizen. It seems that Eurosceptics and Europhiles are both pushing for government monopolies, no one is arguing that competition between governments is a good thing and that we leave things as they are.

So, if UKIP were proper Libertarians they would be arguing that we stay in the EU - but that the EU be solely about consistent rules on trade and competition between competing countries and not a monopolisation in the form of a super-state. Oh, and apart from anything else, Libertarians believe in the free migration of individuals for work - which goes completely against current UKIP policy.

The guy was arguing that UKIP is Libertarian, certainly in regards to immigration it's not http://www.lp.org/issues/immigration - "Crossing an international border to support your family and pursue dreams of a better life is not an inherently criminal act like rape or robbery. If it were, then most of us descend from criminals".

It annoys me because not only do far-right idiots (like Lieutenant <whistle>) claim to be Libertarian when they are not - but Leftist idiots (like Toby <whistle>) automatically believe them and assume that Libertarianism is therefore wrong by association.

All this thread achieves, or even remotely proves, is that 99% of the posters on here are naive spastics.

I am not far right, I am right wing, there is a difference.

Have a browse on UKIP's YouTube account. Some interviews on it might change your mind.
