I live in Bracknell just outside Windsor.

Anyone with a few grand to spare to move countries is technically rich compared to most people in Europe.

So you think the UK should adopt a system which supports every poor person in Europe coming into the country if they want to, with financial ability to relocate not being an issue?

How do you propose to pay for this while maintaining (or improving) public services which barely cater for the existing poor in the UK?

Take more money off someone else will be your answer.

Why do you think they would want to come? Didn't these UKIP supporting nutters in the press warn us we'd be swamped by Romanians and Bulgarians for this very reason?

The reason most people move to a new country is to make a better life for themselves. You should know that better than most. Very few people move to a foreign country to take advantage of the dole system, especially from other parts of Europe.

When did I say that? You have no clue how the benefits system works <doh>

Do you really think you can turn up with no grasp of the language, no flat, etc and just walk into an office where they give you a blank cheque?

It's ****ed, it takes weeks and weeks of checks/questions/interviews/forms etc before you even see a penny of it. Any migrant coming here without 'the financial ability to relocate' would have to be homeless for more than a month, and you still need to get a flat first before claiming housing benefits.

And yes, there is still LOTS of room to tax the richer further. The working poor are losing (what was left of) their quality of life whereas the rich are facing tax cuts?

In the current system, built to keep the rich rich and the poor poor, we see all wealth going to a tiny % of people, irrespective of how hard you work.

There are two separate issues we are discussing though:

    - Immigrants help the UK economy, there are more people working in the UK than ever before right now, and all these people are paying tax and contributing to the maintenance of the state.

    - We should have a welfare-state sitting ready for everyone who wants to come, even if they have no job or are too poor to pay their own way when they come, that ability to pay your way when migrating shouldn't be an issue.

I think the first point is true and I think we both agree that the vast majority migrants to the country come for work, not benefits. My issue is with the second point that Toby is making, where he seems to saying that migration should be free for all, even if they can't afford it, and even if there are no jobs for the people who want to migrate.

Um, about 2 minutes earlier: It still means that only the rich can move to new countries...

I'm not arguing that immigrants coming to Britain are there to claim benefits - I think the vast majority are there to work. You seem to be arguing that we need to make it easier to claim benefits, that they shouldn't face the issue whereby the will be homeless for a month - as if the state has some sort of obligation to look after everyone who turns up at its door?

Not easier, it's not solving anything by changing the rules, it's just feeding rightwing/****wits' pathetic fears that lazy poor foreigns are ruining the UK, rather than the people in charge.

It's gone through pretty much every single minority group, it used to be illegal immigrants, then benefit claimants, then all immigrants, then europeans, then poor europeans and who knows who will be next.

Complicated life any further for people moving here trying to work isn't the solution.

I can't speak for other immigrants but I first came to this country in 2022 thanks to its general acceptance of bummery and the rumours that indeginous cottagers were clean-smelling and relatively shaved.

There's an online table of countries most desirable to visit if you want a throbber up the poop pipe and the UK came 3rd so I'm only here for the swollen flesh, possums.
