Gus Poyet believes a Wembley appearance would be the catalyst for Sunderland’s survival campaign.

Poyet’s side are one step from Wembley Way, as they prepare to take a 2-1 lead into the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

And Poyet reckons that if they could book a cup final place for the first time since 1992 – when they lost to Liverpool in the FA Cup – it would help power the Black Cats to Premier League safety.

“We did so well to win the first leg against Manchester United, but we still have to finish the job,” said Poyet.

“Every game is special, but to reach a cup final would be incredible.

“I am sure that if we get there the whole relationship between the staff, the players and the fans will become stronger.

    “It is really important.

“It won’t change the season completely, but it will be a huge help to us as we try to avoid relegation.”

The cup run has been a thread of success that has run through a largely dismal campaign for the Black Cats.

But, after taking over when Sunderland had just one point from seven games, the Wearsiders have made steady progress under Poyet and now have a real chance of beating the drop.

And Poyet credits the cup run with sparking their survival bid into life.

“The cup run has given us a tremendous lift,” he said.

“When we played Southampton in the cup in November, I think most people thought it was more important than the next match, which was against Man City in the league.

“Because who was expecting us to beat Man City? No-one.

“But we won in the cup and that gave us a little bit of momentum to take into that game against City, and we won that one too.

“And that game against Southampton in the cup was the first game where I felt we really started to change the way that we play.

“That was the start of things, and we have carried on from there.”

We're going into a cup match with a goal start and 9,000 supporters.

We have a chance, not an easy chance, but United haven't been at their best.

A Sunderland goal, in the first half could set us up for one of our greatest nights in recent times.

If we scored first their crowd & players would be shaken, the noise from us could carry us through.

Being off the bottom of the table makes a massive difference to our confidence.

I have a good feeling about Wednesday <ok>
