Alan Shearer has ruled himself out of the running to become the new Cardiff City manager after what he described as "unsuccessful" talks with the club, the BBC reports.

The Newcastle United legend released a statement reading: "I can confirm that I was one of the candidates that the club spoke to about the vacant position.

"During these talks I was most impressed with the vision, ambition and determination of the owner Dato Chan Tien Ghee and the board.

"Unfortunately, those talks were unsuccessful on this occasion."

The ex-England skipper added: "Cardiff City is a great club and I wish them every success next season."

The Match of the Day pundit's only managerial experience was overseeing Newcastle's relegation at the end of the 2008-09 season.

Shearer took charge with eight games to go, but won only one as the Magpies dropped down to the Championship.

The Bluebirds parted company with former manager Dave Jones on 30 May after their defeat to Reading in the Championship play-off semi-final.

Shearer was rumoured to be one of just a few candidates being considered by Cardiff's hierarchy.

Among other managers linked with the post are ex-West Brom coach Roberto di Matteo, former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton, Watford's Malky Mackay and St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes.

To be fair I for one is quite happy that he wont be our manager,
No doubt he was a great player but with his little managerial experience 8 or so games I think its just not the type of manager we are after.
A few people are saying that he would have some good contacts for players etc but if he was going to be our manager we could kiss goodbye to Bellamy coming back as they hate each other, but I cant honestly see bellers coming back.

Good news I think in 1 respect, a manager with no experience will not be walking through the doors again this week <ok>
The not so good news is Cardiff are still looking for a manager (hopefully experienced) and it's all time with the players on the training ground that is being lost.

You can probably tell from the posts that still looking (though not ideal) is slightly more favourable to Sheep Shearer :)

    Without a doubt H <ok>

Another positive thing you can probably take from this is - whoever does come is likely to be more popular
