He could have turned out to be a ***** or a terrorist.

There's plenty more humans left. Don't mope about random strangers.

It definitely has a mannish look about it. I'd have to test it on its understanding of the offside law before committing myself to any rosy-cheeked capering.

It's a horrible thing to say but I hope she was involved - if she wasn't then there's soemone who's randomly going around kidnapping and killing 3 year old kiddies on the loose.

It takes quite a bit to offend me, and I'm not really offended here. My concern is more to do with the ****storm of sentimentality situations like this cause and whether or not I can be annoyed dealing with it.

I quite liked this paragraph ('**** off with yer quotes Mick', I know, I know) from Theodore Dalrymple's book on the dangers of aggressive sentimentality:

"When sentimentality becomes a mass public phenomenon ... it becomes manipulative in an aggressive way: it demands of everyone that he join in. A man who refuses to do so, on the grounds that he does not believe that the purported object of sentiment is worthy of demonstrative display, puts himself outside the pale of the virtuous and becomes almost an enemy of the people. His fault is a political one, a refusal to recognise the truth of the old saw, vox populi, vox dei — the voice of the people is the voice of God. Sentimentality then becomes coercive, that is to say manipulative in a threatening way."

And already today we have had someone sign up and threaten to report this thread to the Police for being offensive: Comply with our sentimentality, or die. So while I'm not offended I'm going to close this thread anyway because I don't want a Daily Mail mob at my door. Sentimental coercion wins for now - but don't worry, give it a few days for society's bizarre 'too soon' buffer period to be over, then we can all listen to the likes of Frankie Boyle make jokes about the subject without a fear of being arrested.
