West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace fancies a cut-price deal for Craig Gardner.

Sunderland midfielder Gardner is set to be out of contract in the summer and seems likely to leave the Wearsiders on a Bosman. But they may decide to cash in on the former England U-21 international this month.

Peace rates Gardner, who scored 10 goals for Midlands rivals Birmingham in the 2010-2011 season to earn a £6million move to the Black Cats.

If the Baggies fail to land the 27-year-old this month, they will follow up their interest in the summer.

Gavin SAFC is a bullshitting idiot seems as we released Ryan Noble in the summer and now plays for Burnley <doh>

Why would we send Watmore back to a league he's out grown? Surely a club in the football league would make sense.

Think its bullshit myself. Who is this @GavinSAFC? Get him told he's an idiot. <laugh>

basically translates as Internacional want $10m (about £7m)

Can't see us signing him for that in January

SUNDERLAND will aim to persuade Ki Sung-Yueng to make his stay on Wearside permanent, according to boss Gus Poyet.

The Black Cats manager admitted he will try to tempt the South Korean into making a full-time move to the North East.

Ki scored one and set up another for hat-trick hero Adam Johnson in Sunderland’s impressive 4-1 Premier League romp at Fulham on Saturday.

The victory lifted Poyet’s men off the foot of the table, and the Uruguayan said the better Sunderland’s form is the more chance he has of convincing Swansea loanee Ki to sign long-term.

“There is a chance (of a full transfer),” said Poyet.

“Swansea had an opportunity to call him back, and they didn’t.

“That was a difficult day for me because I was waiting and waiting.

“I think there are a couple of things we need to make sure: where we are and where we want to go, and with the player as well.

“I can see that he’s enjoying his football and making a difference.”

Ki is on a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light, but Swansea boss Michael Laudrup seriously considered recalling the 24-year-old last week, to ease a midfield injury crisis.

But the Dane decided against it, leaving Poyet as relieved as he was delighted.

“At least we still have him, I was nervous in that time,” said the former Uruguay midfielder. “He’s very happy, it means so much for him to score that goal.

“He cares and he’s enjoying his new position a bit further up the pitch and making a difference.

“I want players with that mentality, to make us play, and he’s been excellent.

“He’s been the most consistent player for me, in my way of playing.

“Then of course John O’Shea and Wes Brown at the back, we’re more solid and pressing some of the space.

“The basics are there then hopefully, if we can keep them all fit.”

Reports in Italy are suggesting that Sunderland have asked about the availability of Catania striker Maxi Lopez. No formal transfer talks have been held as yet, but it is understood that the Serie A outfit are prepared to discuss a sale.

The transfer of Santiago Vergini to Sunderland has moved a step closer to completion with the player due in England to wrap up his move.

Sunderland's pursuit of Santiago Vergini appears to be drawing to a close, with reports out of Argentina suggesting the player has reached an agreement with Estudiantes and will travel to England tomorrow to sign for Gus Poyet's side.

According to TyC Sports, Vergini will sign an initial loan deal until the end of the season, with Sunderland having the option of making the transfer permanent. If the transfer is made permanent, the 25-year-old will sign a four year contract.

The financial details of the transfer have also emerged, Sunderland will pay an initial $700,000 ($100,000 of which goes to Vergini to cover the debt Estudiantes owe him), with another $350,000 in June if they decide to make the transfer permanent and a final $150,000 if the player returns to Argentina before June 2015.

    Poyet has already spoken of the player, who he has been tracking since his time as Brighton manager;

I watched him for about six months when he was with Newell's Old Boys and the way he plays, understands football and his physical size made me think of him as a potential signing.

He has played one game for the national team and he has also been in the squad a few times.

Then of course, everything happened in the summer, Brighton did not go up and I left the club.

However, he is still a player who interests me and now we have the possibility of signing him here at Sunderland.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST are pushing ahead with a permanent move for David Vaughan, as Sunderland look to lighten the load on their wage bill.

Vaughan’s loan spell at the City Ground is due to expire on January 29, but with the midfielder out-of-contract at the Stadium of Light in the summer, Forest have made no secret of their ambitions to keep the Sunderland man.

Sunderland's chances of capturing the signing of Ignacio 'Nacho' Scocco have been given a boost.

Sunderland's pursuit of Nacho Scocco has been given a big boost today, after Internacional declared that they would allow the Argentine international to head out on loan.

Initial reports suggested that the Brazilian club wanted to recoup the £3.5m they paid for the striker and since then it was suggested that they were looking for around £6.5m fee for the 28-year-old. Such a fee would no doubt be beyond Sunderland's budget in this transfer window.

    Today, however, the Vice-President of Internacional, Marcelo Medeiros, has clarified the Brazilian club's position on the matter;

He can leave permanently or on loan.

If by the latter, the club who wants him will have to pay the player's salary in full and pay us for the loan.
The report, if true, will increase Sunderland's chances of signing a player who scored 35 goals in 2013, it will also be a boost to his former side Newell's Old Boys, who are hoping to re-sign the player they sold in the summer.

Scocco's future could well be decided in the next 24 hours, with the player's agent, Fabian Soldini, due to meet the board of Internacional on Thursday in the hope of pushing through a transfer.

Sheffield Wednesday caretaker manager Stuart Gray has confirmed that the club are in talks with Sunderland about the possibility of extending the loan of influential striker Connor Wickham.

The former Ipswich Town striker has proven key in Wednesday's fight for survival, with an incredible record of 8 goals in 11 games. There will undoubtedly be stiff competition for his signature from other Championship sides looking strengthen this January.
