I know most people seem resigned to the point that Messi is the best player in the world, but I disagree. I think all will agree that Barcelona as a team are a better side than Real Madrid, but is Messi realy better than Ronaldo?

Well Ronaldo banged in 41 goals in La Liga which is more goals than Messi has ever scored in one season in La Liga, Messi's best is 31 ten behind Ronaldo's total, it is also a La Liga record!

So if Ronaldo plays for a weaker side than Messi yet still outscores him by 10, what does that say?

If it was down to me I think Ronaldo should get WPOTY. 41 goals in that league is just ridiculous, but I doubt he will as Messi plays in a better side, therefore has won more trophys, but I know which player I'd rather In my side

Messi is the best around, in fact he's the best since Zidane in his pomp, give him another couple of years at this level of brilliance and he should rightfully be regarded as being as good as Maradonna, Pele, Best etc. Ronaldo will never be that good, in all honesty he's not even the best player with that name <ok>.

Explain the 10 goals difference betweenbthe pair in La Liaga then?

Ronaldo is better than the Brazillian one, ask any Madrid fan. Ronaldo has broken the La Liga scoring record and the Real Madrid scoring record, what does this guy have to do to get the respect he deserves, i'd have him over Messi anyday!

Would Messi score 41 in La Liga for Mardrid?

    Er no

Messi scored more goals than any other 2 Barca players, including Villa, who less than a year ago most pundits had as the best striker on earth, Real ATM are a one man team, as soon as other step up and start performing Ronaldos goal tally will drop.

Plus, since when did talent = goals?
In my previous post I mentioned 3 all time greats, but in all honesty the best footballer I've ever seen was Beckenbauer, he had more skill and could read the game better on a bad day than either Messi or Ronaldo at their very best, but he scored less than 100 goals in his career.

Would you also claim that Ruud was a better player than Scholes or Giggs, just because he scored more goals? :emoticon-0136-giggl

Because Ronaldo was the focus of 90% of the Real Madrid attacks this season. With the exception of Benzema, most of Real's other attacking players barely broke into double figures. In contrast, both Villa and Pedro got over 20 goals for Barca in all competitions.

Messi also got 24 assists in all competitions, compared to 16 for Ronaldo. Messi is the better all round player. Oh, and last year Messi got 34 goals in La Liga, compared to 26 for Ronaldo.

If they made him their out and out striker like they did for Ronaldo then yes, he would. In fact, in all competitions last season, Ronaldo took 323 shots, of which 127 were on target, and Messi took 219 shots, of which 115 were on target. So had Messi been playing in place of Ronaldo in the RM team, he may have scored even more goals as he'd have had 50% more chances than he got at Barca.

Messi is the best around and people do tend to greatly underestimate Real. After all, they did score more goals than Barca last year. Also, Messi's record in the Champions League over the last 3 or 4 seasons has been simply incredible. He was also the best player on the park whilst playing for the best team in the world playing at their absolute best against United in the final when in fairness they spanked us.

Two words. Diego Maradona. That fat bastard couldn't manage a pie shop, let alone a national football team...

Also, other than Messi, the current Argie football team is severely lacking in world class players imo. Banega, Pastore and Di Maria have potential, but still need to improve, and they have a pretty shocking defence.

To base how good players are solely on goals is absurd.
Both are spectacular players, but Messi in my eyes is simply a class above.

I think the fact is,that Messi is a better team player, but Ronaldo will score more goals. It's difficult to compare the two, because there roles are so different. Those two in the same team would be devastating

Messi is in his own world at the moment. He is untouchable and is the best on the planet.

Argentina are **** with Messi in the side as Messi doesnt have the luxury of the best team in the world around him.

Small ( massive ) things like this can effect a player like messi who does rely on the Barcelona team to give him the freedom he has. He exploits it brilliantly aswell.

Ronaldo could pull a **** team to victory. Hell he did it with us on many occasions and despite Reals all star cast it was often Ronaldo doing the important stuff.

I hope Messi moves on one day, to challenge himself and prove to people that he is the best or does something with Argentina.

    Who is better? Probably Messi.

Who would fit into more teams? Ronaldo without question. A goal scoring machine who doesnt require the best midfield in world football would suit more teams than a player who does need the best midfield in world football.

You would think, but I think they'd be rubbish together. I think there would be too much competition between them and they would get in each others way a lot and having them both, as good as they both are, would probably be to the detriment of the team. Would be an interesting idea though, if they ever have a La Liga 11 team in a charity match or something you would expect both to start.

When has Ronaldo ever pulled a **** team to victory? This Real team is not ****, nor was the United one. Ronaldo is worse for Portugal than Messi is for Argentina and they both have failed at major tournaments so how exactly does Ronaldo pull Portugal to victory?

No evidence to back that up.

I agree. In fact I would say it's more a case of whenver Ronaldo is playing he has to be the focus of the entire team. And then if he plays **** the whole team plays ****.

On the other hand, when Messi plays he doesn't have to be the attacking focus. So if he doesn't have a great game, it doesn't necessarily drag the whole team down. Although the fact he's only ever played for Barca means there have always been players around him to pick up the slack if needed.

some people are talking about ronaldo like he is so far behind Messi to being the number one player. Ronaldo is a phenomenon. His strength, physique and ability and speed all rolled into one make him the most perfect footballer in the modern game.

He was a massive success in England and is becoming a massive success in Spain and his goal scoring record is proof of that. He is so far ahead of any other attacking footballer in the world its just insane......except Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is rewriting history every season he plays. He plays football like you do when you are in the school yard and does it with remarkable ease. At times, you almost know he is taking it easy against a team but when he needs to get it on, he does the business. Of course, he has Xavi and Iniesta to supply the balls to him but Messi doesnt play in a strict strikers role. He roams about the pitch and the likes of Pedro and Villa get heavily involved in goals. In Madrid, Ronaldo is simply their MAN. He is the centre focus of the team and more often than not, passes and chances will fall to him more easily as he is the go to the guy in the team

Who is better? Who cares? We should just be thankful we are privileged enough to witness possibly two of the greatest footballers ever to grace the game at the height of their powers.

If I HAD to choose? Messi..but only just
