It would have been interesting to know why they did it; perhaps on the back of two Japanese signings... oops, hang on a minute :emoticon-0104-surpr

The colour is subjective. You don't like it others will. You can't choose a colour kit that everyone will like. I still think the point was to have enough of a change to tempt people to buy more, as if you have a red and white striped shirt from the previous season, then you may think about changing the year after if you don't look too different to others wearing the latest striped one.

For what it is worth, I expect we'll be in stripes next season. Why don't we have blue shorts? Do you think we should?

So the straight dope from the player himself about coming to Saints to realise his ambition of playing in the Premier League was complete bunkum then..? His outburst of joy in the players tunnel after the match against Coventry 4-0 was unrehearsed acting, rather than a genuine feeling of achievement..?

So, what you are saying is that the very player you support, at the club you support, is a liar and deceiver.

Bias is a useful thing when properly used as a guide, but don't let it dominate. CBK.

Could be either, or it could be something else. What we do know is, Frau Liebherr wanted him to stay, but instead he chose to walk away at the worst possible time (for us, not for him). We'll know more soon enough so it's probably fruitless speculating until then. But my money's on some connotation not far off the second of your hypotheses.

Why not be properly historic and go back to squares or halves..? We've already had the sash, and by and large, people loved it.

I think some supporters need to reassess what they support a football club for - feeling a sense of involvement as their City club goes from success to success, or having a disgruntled feeling because they don't play in stripes. I mean come on, what kind of a no-brainer choice is that..?

Since the club has been valued at upwards of £100m, that seems like a non-starter to me sadly. Also would a supporters' trust ever have sanctioned the sacking of Adkins?

I think we will too, even if Cortese stayed. It's part marketing ploy as you say. When Saints go back to stripes the marketing will be based around "tradition" & "history" But I still think that sticking with your core identity will make you as much money as chopping & changing.

Speaking of which, Atletico Madrid look splendid in their red & white shirts and blue shorts... which history shows they get from a club called Southampton.

Where as many more believe K Liebherr wants to sell (Even the journo's that haven't been paid off by Cortese Redstripe). We will see soon enough who is right.

Actually that story pertains to Athletic Bilbao not Atletico: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletic_Bilbao#Club_colours

Fonte and footballers are not necessarily liars... but they play the PR game and they ALWAYS tell fans what they want to hear when they join a new club. Dead easy to say "I want to play in the Premiership". If it happens he looks profound, if it doesn't, no one remembers it and he's moved onto another club.

"I'm joining a club with ambition with great support"... said every player joining any club.

I would, but the club has played in black shorts for I think around 60 years. Its the colours most ingrained in the minds of fans still alive. It's what you would call the "iconic" Southampton kit.

Well I think the person who wrote that history maybe misled that Saints were playing in black shorts back then, when in fact, it was navy blue. So, whether Bilbao or Madrid ended up in red & white with black or blue shorts, their initial inspiration did come from Southampton.

at the same time... joining a league one club with a convincing ambition to get into the premier league and beyond gives you confidence in your contractual promotion pay rises and your long term international prospects.

you're totally right that financial stability is number one.

I wonder if the red kit will be "iconic" in 20 years time, with a trophy or three won? My lad is 12 and when this years kit was released he said he didn't like it or wouldn't wear it. He has one and loves it. If we won a trophy or two or consistently were top 6 over the next 10 years, I bet he'll be thinking the red kit as iconic.

They said they retained the blue Blackburn shorts when they switched shirts.
