What nonsense. I'm absolutely aware of what people consider his faults. In fact I'm quite sure that I probably wouldn't particularly like the guy. I'm just confused as to what people think is so bad about him that it's detrimentally effected what he's done at the club? Oooh he's a bit nasty? So what? I think he was exceptionally good at his job. Does that mean I think he's a nice bloke? No. Does the fact he was difficult take away from the fact he was exceptionally good at his job? No. It really is as simple as that.
Come on CBK, what shall we discuss? I'm happy to discuss the negativities sensibly. I am a season ticket holder so I go to home league games and a few away games (fewer this year though due to some financial restraints) I am more pro-Cortese than anti, so I fit your bill. I wouldn't call myself a worshipper as I see his flaws too. Where shall we start: the boat? the ticket prices? the loving up to journos? the kit colour? You choose.
All very well posting about the negative things sometimes, but if that's all you do then some can come across as just bitter or just a total WUM. For example, if every post I made poured scorn on the motivation of our players, fans, management, owners, the FA and the knowledge and character of the posters on this board then I would expect most to think, "here he goes again". If I further bleated on relentlessly about how every other fan didn't measure up to my high standards of support then many might think "who the hell does he think he is?!" If we can't find at least something to celebrate in our present position then what would make you satisfied?
This is a funny post Archers, as it seems in yours he can do no right. I even offered you the chance to discuss this, but you declined. LTL has posted sensibly, but positively in favour of what Cortese has done for the club. You have just made snide remarks about him. Let's get the debate on the table. Maybe my post should have echoed yours: It's obvious Nicola can do no right in your eyes. If he spent a year living in a slum, helping those people, it would only be in his own interests I am sure.
By the way, going back to the DVD/Project point that you don't think worth considering CBK. I'm pretty amazed by that too. Let's break it down into a more consumable example - I'm pretty sure that nearly every person on this forum could give an example (perhaps even themselves) of a person that has taken a job at a smaller company, often on less pay, because they are excited by the potential within that company, impressed by the ambition and the future plans, and see that as something that in the long-term will benefit them individually, both professionally and personally, a lot more than staying within a larger corporation. I've certainly done that. Now I know that footballers aren't always credited with towering intellect or whiter than white morals, but to suggest that they are completely immune to that is ridiculous to the extreme. Let's take Fonte as case number one.......
Happy to. I would suggest that Fonte did not take a pay cut at all to join Saints from Palace. I imagine his perception of "ambition" could have been mostly based upon the thought that "... hey, they are paying me this much, it must mean they'll buy other players for similar and we will probably get promoted quickly... and if we don't... I can always get another transfer anyway"
Great. Why do you feel it was wrong to remove the red and white stripes with black shorts? It hasn't made me support the team any more or any less.
If your new boss or potential boss sat you down with that DVD, I'm sure after watching it, you'd feel the polite thing to do was to say "that's great"... whilst thinking "what a load of crap, just show me the money".
He went down a division. Why? Purely for money? Or because he thought the ambition and potential of Southampton was greater than that of Palace? (Well done for ignoring the rest of the post by the way).
For the record mate, even the mildest criticism or questioning of Cortese on this forum tends to bring forth a torrent of abuse, quite a bit of it personal (though not from you tbf). I'm glad you thought my post was funny though, as it was obviously meant as a joke. I've said many times that I recognise Cortese's massive contribution to SFC. But I've always, as I've said before, had some reservations about him, and the manner of his leaving us appears to confirm some of my doubts. I've been clobbered on this forum more than once for daring to question the Adkins sacking (cue more abuse...), and I'm still not convinced the decision was the right one. That is only my opinion though, others are entitled to theirs. And I've always been 100% behind Pochettino.
I have certainly taken jobs that I enthuse about, and not in terms of money. I have also refused offers of very well paid jobs where I did not engage with the company's policy. Having worked for STC [Southampton] in undersea fibre optics, I was offered the chance to go to work for Exxon Oil in Fawley. I took the usual 5 bob tour around the site, saw the environmental damage and the poisoned pools and was very hesitant. I was offered the job and I let it go. I sent them a polite letter of refusal, leaving out all the detail. Nowadays, I'd probably put in all the detail of how I couldn't possibly work for a company that was so slack and dangerous with its housework.
Awful colour kit, awful kit design, no explanation as to the change in design or colours, but was done on the basis of "fans are suckers and will buy anything these days" It was an unnessecary move, could have sold just as many shirts with a traditional design & colour, maybe even more. So what was the point? I can't say because Cortese or anyone at the club have never said.
We do not know why he left tho do we? It can be either Liebherr wants to sell and he didn't like it or he got to big for his boots and couldn't hack losing some control.
For money & security. Palace were on the verge of administration, I believe they had missed some payments to players. Saints approach was at the right time and I'm sure his agent advised him it was a safe move FINANCIALLY.
