Head Coach of Elite Development links up with Holloway at The Den …

MARC Bircham has left QPR to join Millwall as part of Ian Holloway’s new-look backroom team at The Den.

The 35 year-old, who was primarily responsible for the R’s Elite Development Squad at Loftus Road, has taken up a role as First Team Coach with the Sky Bet Championship strugglers.

Bircham, who made 104 league appearances for the Lions as a player, leaves Loftus Road after four years as a member of the coaching staff.

A legend as a player in W12, Bircham featured on 167 occasions for the R’s, scoring seven goals, before injury forced him into retirement at Yeovil Town in 2008.

He returned to QPR as Youth Team Coach in 2009, before being promoted to Head Coach of Elite Development in the summer of 2012.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Bircham said: “It’s been a really tough decision to leave Loftus Road because of the affection I have for the club.

“I’ve loved every minute of my time at QPR as a coach, as I did as a player, especially working with Harry (Redknapp) and his staff over the last year or so.

“Ultimately though, the opportunity to join Millwall and to link up with Ollie again, was one I couldn’t turn down.

“I want to manage at first team level one day and this is the next stage of my development as a coach.”

I know its a step up but its a bit strange when the academy is so close.

edit, nines beat me to it by seconds.

The Millwall home match at the end of the season could have a special and unique atmpsphere with the return of both Ollie and Birchy. Should be very interesting.

It's a shame as he was doing well with the EDS. I wonder who will take over?

I think furlong coaches the u16s, he may step up and they'd get someone else in for the kids.

Not sure that is a good decision for him, Ollie never lasts in a job (but what manager does). Good luck to Birchy though, he's keen to develop himself so I wish him the very best in his new role.

however, once he's got himself into a first team job, he can follow Holloway around to different jobs.

Very sad to see him leave, but its understandable.

maybe one day he'll be back in a more senior position at the R's. (Maybe with Gaz?)

Whatever though I'm sure he'll always be welcomed at Loftus Road.

Good point, maybe Mark knows this and there is a chance that if or when this happens he could step up as manager.

Best of luck to them both, I think they will need it at the lions.

Just seen that he's gone and joined Holloway at Millwall as first team coach, honestly I'm a bit gutted with this as he's done good by our youth since he joined.

Can't get the site up but its on BBC sport

He can't be that good. Your squads average age must be about 30.

That's a bugger, but maybe a decent move for him. Ive got a feeling he'll be back at some point though.
