GONE!!!! 1 minute ago @TelegraphSport Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese has resigned, the Premier League club has announced.
Southampton Football Club: "Southampton FC announces that club owner Katharina Liebherr has taken on the role of non-executive Chairman. This follows the resignation of Nicola Cortese. A search has begun for a Chief Executive Officer who will take over." Katharina Liebherr: "With great regret we have accepted the resignation of Mr Cortese. He has done a wonderful job and we very much wanted him to stay. A search has now begun for a successor. It is business as usual and we will ensure that the manager, team and staff at the club have all the help and support they need."
talkSPORT's man on the south coast Alex Crook says it will not surprise him if Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino and players join former chairman Nicola Cortese in leaving the club. The Italian left St Mary's Stadium following a disagreement with owner Katharina Liebherr, who took over the club after her father, Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr, died in 2010. It is well documented that the former chairman had a close bond with both Pochettino and the players, with the Argentine manager saying in May, when Cortese previously threatened to leave, that he would also depart should the chairman go. Crook claimed that it is now 50/50 whether the boss stays and also pointed out how both Morgan Schneiderlin and Luke Shaw have made no secret of their dedication to Cortese and that the Italian's departure will now lead to clubs making bids for Saints stars. He either does or chickens out and becomes a hypocrite .......... either way it will unsettle the players before the game. If he doesn't walk the players will be wondering if he will at some point. Not truly fantastic news but it's a straw I'll clutch.
None of these characters will be on the pitch on Saturday so most of it is an irrelevance. We are the ones with a point to prove after last week and hopefully will build on that.
To be fair, Pochettino said that 8 months ago. That's a long time when he's been around the squad most days. He could well feel different now...
I'm not just disagreeing for the sake of it but I think it is relevant. We've all seen how a club in turmoil can suffer ....... I think the Southampton players minds will be on if the manager will go rather than the match. I see it as a good thing that Pochettino has said he'll get through the weekend before deciding his future. He brought in a number of players and they all seem to respect and like him ....... this disruption may not make a massive difference but matches are often won & lost on minor events. I know from the workplace that disruption like this can affect everyone's performance, fingers crossed
Quits mid season during a transfer window after owner makes it public she wants rid of the club. Even if there's no fallout before the weekend, I can't see this going too well short-term and long-term unless Le Tuss has had a windfall off one of Merse's great tips.
Accepting gambling tips from a plum like Merson the alcoholic is akin to taking health advice from a 28 stone, 20 pints and 60-a-day Woodbine smoker! Pointless.
Haha yeah, you wouldn't share a gram with Le Tiss though, there'd be **** all left after he's had his big ol' beak in there. Yeah, that was kind of my point, I see no hope coming from Le Tuss' direction.
