    Just saw this on newsnow:

    http://swol.co/newcastle-united--integrity-of-english-football-in-serious-jeopardy/32403

Not sure if any of you have seen it, but it's worth a read. It's not entirely factually correct ("that instead of their fans trending worldwide for Captain Fabricio Coloccini's Party on the night of last year's Europa League final, with better officiating they would have been celebrating winning The Europa League" ???) and is indeed slanted towards the conspiracy angle. But I felt it a thoroughly entertaining read. Not trying to drag up the 'goal that wasn't' stuff anymore. Just thought it was fairly on topic.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's match fixing going on in this country at the top level. The money in the game and the stakes involved make it ripe for interference. When you add the influence of the far east and no doubt the high stakes betting syndicates it makes it all the more possible. Some of the refereeing decisions in games over the past few seasons have bordered on the absurd. Referee's and their assistants have always made human errors but some decisions just defy utter belief.

Don't be surprised if in 10-15 years time it turns out that games have been fixed/ officials bought. It happens in other countries. Why not here?

I hear you. I wouldn't discount anything and as you said, there does appear to be enough money involved to suggest the raft of bad decisions highlighted in the article, can't all just be the result of incompetent refereeing.

The writer of the article seems pretty certain that corruption is at the heart of the problem. It would be good if there was some actual evidence to back up his claims. I do like a good conspiracy theory, so am happy to go along with it, to a certain extent. :emoticon-0138-think

    Conspiracy? Codsballocks.

It is, however, a fear of power. Fairly simple that human beings will be intimidated by egotastic footballers, megalomaniac clubs and infinitely wealthy owners. Ref's were afraid of Fergie, they're not afraid of Moyes. They fear City, not Newcastle. They sh1t themselves with Jose, aren't too fussed about Steve Clarke. Simple. But there's no corruption. If we were owned by Vladimir Putin and had Luiz Scolari in the dugout, Tiote would be up for goal of the season.

And we wouldn't have to be worried about losing him anytime soon.

If we were owned by Vladimir Putin and had Luiz Scolari in the dugout, Tiote probably wouldn't be in the team.

I don't buy into the conspiracy theory though.

The rational explanation is far more plausible, but isn't nearly as fun!
