I'm sorry for not coming back, I didn't think that chat took root, so to speak. As far as I'm aware, the rules are vague on this. Some people say QPR aren't based on a place, but then others say there is a Queen Park in the area, so I'm not 100% sure on that one, but I'd accept it if someone insisted. Grimsby Town's location I was wasn't aware of. Obviously, it was named after Grimsby and Cleethorpes is just down the road by a couple of miles, so I don't think that qualifies. The ones that readily spring to mind are Arsenal [yep, good one, Puck], who named themselves Woolwich Arsenal, then just Arsenal after they moved across town to Highbury and now Holloway [and we get stuffy about MKD], and the train station was named after them. Then there is Port Vale, which is a definite no-place these days, but the name refers to a series of canals in the Staffordshire area and there were canal ports along the banks. I didn't know that bit, I looked it up. So that's about it. Some say 3 clubs, some say 2 [QPR left out]. Don't think anymore qualify. If you include the Conferences and Semi-Pro leagues the number goes up dramatically, so I'm led to believe.
Don't think they ever did. It went from The Friends Provident blah blah... to St Mary's Stadium and FlyBe got on the shirts, seats and everywhere else they could. I find aap3 quite classy, in comparison.
Dagenham and Redbridge are two places. And St. Johnstone are named after the ancient name for Perth, St. John's Toun. Perth hadn't been called that for hundreds of years when the club was founded in1885. It's a bit like calling Bath City Aquae Sulis City.
Yep, Dag and Red represents two places, so doesn't qualify. The Scottish divisions are a right kettle of fish. Hibernian for example. Not sure there's a part of Edinburgh called that. There is Midlothian, so Hearts, or Heart of Midlothian, as the results announcers always used to call them, don't qualify. St Johnstone, as you say, are really like Port Vale in that are named after something that doesn't really exist anymore. St Mirren, I think are another. Morton, I think QoS. These days, Rangers because they've dropped the Glasgow as have Celtic. Raith Rovers, Albion Rovers, Queen's Park, [unless there's another hidden Queen's Park area] and that must be the lot. Quite a few in Scotland.
Arsenal is debateable as they used to be called Woolwich Arsenal after the massive, erm, arsenal south of the river. So, would that count? Someone has pointed out Dagenham & Redbridge as they are two places but although that's an excellent answer it's pushing it a little. But other than these two clubs, one can go through the whole of the four league tables and find a place name in each of the clubs' names. So Arsenal is the only one I could think of.
Portsmouth isn't just a place, it's a state of mind. A Portsmouth state of mind...... Now you're in Poooooortsmooooouth, etc, etc. Kingstonian. Concord Rangers
And presumably, after reading the entire thread, the name Port Vale didn't stand out in bold for you.
Is that all there is from the Conference, etc..? Hardly dramatic is it. I must have been duped. The Scottish divisions are loaded with them.
I was going to suggest Airbus UK in the Welsh league but it turns out they're actually called Airbus UK Broughton F.C.
Hey guys, Rangers fan in peace. I looked in because of the Cortese roumors, and picked up on this thread. CBK, owners like Tan and the guy from Hull must buy football clubs as vanity purchases - much like Abramovitch and the Sheiks at City did. They see them as toys (allbeit expensive ones) and want to play with them by their own rules, much like we do if we buy Football Manager or FIFA. As someone who's had the pain of the Briatore era (and whilst he and the poison dwarf did save the club from going bankrupt, it was pain), seeing even worse or more pointless decisions being made by other owners makes me feel for the fans, even if they're rival clubs like Cardiff, who we've had some bad blood with in the past. Gartside's another matter, a fan of the club who's prepared to ride the football rollercoaster with no expectation of profit at the end of it, and willing to spend a lot of personal money to hopefully bring some success. Although I do think his comment about not worrying about being £167 million in debt was a bit stupid!
Ah yes, forgot about them. There's a few in Wales as well. TNS - The New Saints aka Total Network Solutions (leading to the famous Stelling-ism "They'll be dancing on the streets of Total Network Solutions!")
Jelavic has signed a 3.5 year deal. Long is expected to sign in time to play against Norwich on Saturday
Palace are in Norwood, just north of Croydon. I always think Croydon myself. They initially played in Crystal Palace Park. Don't ask me any more, I know nothing else about them, and I'm not 100% sure of that much.
