I would prefer a public holiday for Armistice Day, or similar rather than one to celebrate an individual. If you have one for an individual there will always be some who support the person and some against. Especially if it is a politician.

Even if it is an individual with no political connections it could always backfire in the future. Imagine if we had a Jimmy Saville bank holiday to celebrate all his charity work, and then it had come out he was a ****.

 

I'd prefer to swap weekdays and weekends

Well I'm getting fireworks on 8th April, and I'll have a buffet and sparklers. And I'll burn an old bag with thatcher's face drawn on it.

I think it'd be symbolic if all British manufacturing industry and any remaining mines closed down for the day too.

 

... and all school children raise their carton of milk ....

 

I traditionally do that on the 9th anyway, the mrs' birthday!
