It would be spectacular if they built a replica of the original

Dagenham and Redbridge. They're named after TWO places!

FlowerKingzOddRiverOakWizrards - would have been my full name and would have given me a team from each continent except Antarctica.

To be fair that came to an end purely because they stopped sponsoring.

Ah yep were they on the stadium, but not the name of it. I don't object to that tbh.

Going back to the earlier conversation, historically Arsenal isn't a place and certainly wasn't when the team was founded (and of course the team was also founded in a different part of London). There was no area of London called Arsenal just as there was no area of London called Archway. Both get used now because the tube is so universal in London that most people use their nearest tube station to describe where they live. Arsenal station was originally called Gillespie Road and the name was only changed in the 30s. So if anything the place Arsenal is named after the football team rather than the other way round.

On a related note, QPR are based in Shepherd's Bush rather than Queen's Park because they took over Loftus Road when Shepherd's Bush FC closed down during World War 1 and Grimsby are actually based in Cleethorpes.

That's precisely what he's doing. He's a bullshitting bully. He didn't even buy the club, he merely gave us some loans, repayable at a nice rate of interest. He won't walk away without selling for a good price either, not with £70mill of debt still owed. He would claim that changing the name would allow him to get more investment, which is a ridiculous claim based on absolutely no market research whatsoever.

I believe the FA will veto him on the name change and he'll find himself painted into a corner of his own stubborn making. If the FA don't veto him, we're all potentially ****ed.

"Fit and proper" should refer to more than just someone's financial integrity...

Can't believe a grown man is making a stand about a name change...the man is a bully who probably should have been smacked more as a child (sorry if that is not pc, but he is acting like an indulged child).

This. A thousand times this. I hope the FA do veto him (as long as there's no consequences for Hull).... Maybe you fans should write to the FA on mass expressing your desire for them to Veto the name change?

I'm actually pretty confident that FA will block this one. I know this is the FA we're talking about and they do like to make stuff up on the fly, but surely even they can't turn down this PR win.

In other oop north (of Birmingham) crap finances news, in the Graun today: Blackburn lost £37m last season (wages 137% of income) and will lose £24m this year. In the new FFP rules you get a transfer embargo for losing £3m+. They're eighth in the Champ at the moment, if they don't somehow get promoted, things are gonna get ugly. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jan/14/blackburn-rovers-manchester-city-venkys

Arsenal began life as Woolwich Arsenal, a works team of the South East London armaments factory. So in a sense they are named after a place, albeit a place a long way from their current north London home.

There's no area in London called Millwall. the club of that name started life on the Isle of Dogs, before crossing the river to Bermondsey.

Is Crystal Palace a place? In the sense that a building is a place, it is. I think there's even a Crystal Palace railway station, so it can't be them.

Can't think of any other clubs that come close to fitting the profile of not being named after a place.
