Swansea come into the game in 13th place on 21 points with Spurs in 5th place on 40 points. This will be the 43rd time the two teams have met. Swansea City were founded in 1912 as Swansea Town (they changed their name to Swansea City in 1969) and joined the Second Division of the Southern League for the 1913-14 season. After World War One, The Jacks became members of the SL First Division and joined the Football League in season 1920-21 when the Southern League was incorporated to form the Third Division of the Football League. The following season the division was re-named the Third Division South. The first meeting between Spurs and Swansea came in the Second Division in November 1928 at Vetch Field with the home side winning 4-0. The reverse fixture in March 1929 at White Hart Lane ended in a 1-1 draw. The clubs met for a further eight seasons in Division Two between seasons 1930-31 and 1938-39 with 10 wins for Spurs, 2 wins for Swansea and 4 matches drawn. During the Second World War, the clubs played two games in the Football League South with a win each. The clubs played for two more seasons in Division Two after WW2 with three wins for Spurs and one for Swansea. Spurs and Swansea have played five games in the Football League Cup, the first of which came in the second round in September 1970 with Tottenham winning 3-0 at the Lane with goals from Steve Perryman, Martin Peters and Roger Morgan. Eight years later, Swansea drew with Spurs 2-2 at Vetch Field in the second round first leg and won 3-1 at White Hart Lane. The most recent League Cup meetings came in the second round in 1991 with Swansea winning 1-0 at home in the first leg and Spurs winning 5-1 at White Hart Lane with goals from Paul Stewart, Vinnie Samways, Gary Lineker, Paul Allen and an own goal. Swansea City won promotion to the Top Flight of English Football for the first time in season 1981-82 and were league leaders at one stage before finishing in 6th position. The match at Vetch Field in September 1981 resulted in a 2-1 win for The Swans with Glenn Hoddle scoring for Spurs, while the return match at the Lane in May 1982 was won 2-1 by Spurs with Gary Brooke scoring both goals. A similar set of results came in Swansea's second season in Division One with a 2-0 home win in Swansea and a 1-0 home win in Tottenham. The two clubs came in a friendly played in Swansea in November 1992, which resulted in a 3-3 draw. Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City have never met in the FA Cup. Swansea became the first Welsh club to play in the Premier League by winning the play-off against Reading at Wembley 4-2 thanks mainly to a Scott Sinclair hat-trick. The fixture at the Liberty Stadium in December 2011 finished in a 1-1 draw with Spurs going ahead just before half-time through Rafael van der Vaart but Swansea salvaged a point with a late equaliser from Scott Sinclair. Rafael van der Vaart put Spurs 1-0 up at halftime in the match at White Hart Lane in April 2012 with a 19th minute goal. Sigurdsson equalised for Swansea in the 59th minute but a brace from Emmanuel Adebayor secured the three points for Spurs. During the 2012 summer Tottenham Hotspur signed Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from 1899 Hoffenheim but who had been on loan at Swansea City for the 2011-12 season. The game at White Hart Lane in December 2012 was won by a Jan Vertonghen goal scored in the 75th minute. Swansea won the first major trophy in their history in February 2013 when they beat Bradford City in the Football League Cup Final 5-0. The game at Liberty Stadium at the end of March 2013 was won 2-1 by Spurs. Jan Vertonghen put Spurs ahead after 7 minutes and Gareth Bale added a second on 21 minutes. Swansea pulled a goal back through Miguel Michu on 71 minutes. Tottenham won their opening home game of the 2013-14 season in August beating Swansea 1-0 thanks to a 28th minute Roberto Soldado penalty after Jonjo Shelvey had fouled Andros Townsend. Overall, Spurs have won 24, Swansea have won 10 and 8 of the 42 matches played so far between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Swansea City Matches 1928-2014 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Swansea.... Great thread THFC.Really looking forward to this one.Two good footballing teams .Glad Sherwood has been given a chance at your place, nice to see clubs promoting from within. On the game itself i think it will be the usual tight affair with a goal separating the teams. We could do with a positive performance from this game because although we are fantastic in posession we lack that killer touch in the final third and our performances need to improve because we have four very important games coming up which could define our season.
Another game that we should have a good chance of winning on home turf. We have had some good battles with spurs and they have Tim Sherwood as their new manager after the side going of the boil with the loss of Bale. A must win game due to where we are....
Giving this very good thread a bump so we can talk footie again instead of the rubbish that's been going on lately. Don't think Spurs looked too clever v Palace at the weekend despite coming out on top so I think we might actually get something. Bearing in mind they are still a very decent team that will be challenging up the top end I'd take a draw now no problem. We have some very winnable games after that imo. Laudrup seems to think we may get some of our walking wounded back for the game though he wasn't specific as to which ones. Heart says Swans win so I'm going 2-0.
Difficult game and one that we're not expecting much from! To get anything from this game is a bonus! And we need some bonus points to ease the pressure from the must win games coming up!! Heart: 2-1 swans Head: 2-1 spurs
Stirling work THFC6061. I do like a good early match thread so we can enjoy the build up, discuss team selections and post injury news etc. Like Kifflom! I would take the draw right now. Spurs have to be favourites with the squad of players they've got and our mini injury crisis. Just take Siggy for example, came in and was our best player providing goals and assists which spared Brendan's team from the relegation battle....but only a bit part player for Spurs. Chadli was apparently near the top of Laudrup's wish list last summer....bit part player for Spurs. You've got the likes of Dembele (who would walk into our team) being touted around, sounds like you want rid. Not to mention the star quality of players like Erikkson, Paulinho and Soldado...a few of us were dreaming of acquiring him last summer. Has scored 1 goal in 2 games pretty much in whichever team he has been playing in. Feel that now you have gone more attacking and play 2 up top it is only a matter of time before he starts banging them in. The threats are everywhere, particular concerns for me are; Kyle Walker - we are vulnerable to attack down our left hand side and he loves to go forward. Will definitely skin young Ben Davies for pace when he comes on the overlap. Also possesses a bullet of a shot. Tremmel in goal has been beaten from distance a few times this season. Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend - our full-backs love to go forward leaving us vulnerable to counter attacks. The raw pace and trickery of these 2 could undo us for sure. Emmanuel Adebayor - has always been a handful for any defence and obviously has had an arm put around him and is returning to form. Could never understand why both he and Defoe didn't get more minutes. Add Soldado in and you have 3 lethal strikers there. He is particular concern for me because he is so strong in the air (as well as his many other qualities). We are weak in the aerial battle department. Can see him either scoring from a set piece or winning a flick on to supply Soldado etc. The one glimmer for us is you seem to be weakest at the back, specifically centre-back. I think if we can supply Bony he might be able to do something there. I feel our best chance is to play keep ball and restrict your opportunities to attack. We must be alive to the counter attack. We need Leon sitting in front of the defence and plugging the holes when our full-backs go forward. We need a proper shift from Mr. Shelvey and we need Pozuelo and Routledge to take the right option after they've bought some space in the final 3rd. We have been over complicating things around the opposition's penalty box lately. We need to score 1 or 2 goals to get any kind of result. Here's to a good game.
What a good thread , and what a contrasting styles of managers, Sherwood v I'm so far up my own arse I can see daylight Villas - Boas , much more an attacking threat and with Adebayer back in favour the only adds to their ability to score from all over the pitch.Another difficult game but one if the defence tighten up and concentrate then it's a game which we can not only match them but could come away with all 3 points.A battering by Spurs at their place earlier this season but only beat us by a penalty so all to play for .Hopefully no more injuries and then kick on looking up the table rather than down .
Spurs have not been the same team since Bale's exit, and even the £100 Million spend hasn't really produced the goods yet, so I'm pretty upbeat that we can get something from this game, we are at home after all! 2-1 to Swansea will be my Prediction................
Well we are at Home so if we lose again then I think jinx should start to make some noises, He has kept his gob shut all season because of the feud between the two but he should take charge and do something before its too late...
F**K me have we played this one already ? Give us a chance to actually have a go before the negatives dai/LNB or whatever you come up with next
This is certainly a game we can take something from. It's our inconsistency that's been the worry for me, although I do think the signs have been there recently that we'll get better in that regard. A good showing and a point or three and we could easily shoot up a few places a couple of games following this one. Tenth spot is up for grabs in the short term and looking at the congestion in the bottom half I think we should be aiming for at least that long term. I'm not sure new manager syndrome's kicked in that much and hopefully we'll catch Spurs still in the transition phase.
Sherwoods got them more in an open attacking mindset which will suit us ,far better than them sitting back and making us try to break them down ,thats not to say that wont be how it pans out at the start .Winning the midfield is important as they can score from a variety of positions ,Hopefully a good game with two attacking sides and should make for a great spectacle for the neutral .
The flanks worry me the most. Our full backs just don't have the pace to cope with Lennon and Townsend - they'll be murdered!! Add Walker also marauding down the right and we've got problems. I've even wondered about doubling Taylor and Davies on the left with Routs getting strict orders to protect Rangel on the right. That's too drastic, though and will nullify our own attacking options. Our best bet is to deny them the ball with constant possession. At our best we could do that but we have not been anywhere near our best this season, so we'll have our hands full on Sunday. However, if we can get early ball to Bony, perhaps he can ruffle the feathers of a not great back four. Oh, and then there's Adebayor who will wreak havoc with our centre backs in the air. Best we try for 100% possession so none of them get the ball.
