I may well be wrong, but personally I don't want him. More hustle and bustle and no attempt to deal with the problem of lack of creativity.

Also, if the board are willing to bring new players in, it seems they've decided to back CH until the end of the season.

In my opinion, bad decision, and one that will probably relegate us.

I hope it's not for the reported £3 million. If so, think we've been had. If he signs, Hughton won't be going anywhere for a while.

He isnt someone I personally would want us to sign - I will give him a chance though and hopefully he can prove a few of us wrong.

Am I right in thinking he can play LB and LM? I have it in my head that hes played left back for Argentina, could the idea be to play him there and move Olsson forward?

A player trying to make the Argentine squad, showing Pardew he was wrong, feeling isolated this season he has multiple sources of motivation, could just work out and could be the right player to gel with Olsson. I'm trying to keep my glass half full.

If all this is true and he is being presented as a signing to 'save our season' then I have to say I am very underwhelmed and a bit worried.

Although I have never watched him play in all fairness.

At one point he was a very good player, rated by Maradonna (maybe that's not a good thing) as one of the players that the argentine team was built around. It is truly terrible to get another international player at carrow road.

what a joke thread vietnam - how can one player relegate us?
i'm prepared to give him a chance - he hopefully improve our squad and provide valuable cover for pilkington who is injury prone. a lot of people are moaning about pilks cover, redmond!

But this does absolutely nothing to address the issue of lack of decent service in to the striker/s. Better to spend that sort of money on a canny playmaker, an upgrade on Wes, if you like, who dwells on the ball and gets robbed less often.
That might well improve our season - a back up left wing / flank player won't, imho.

What a bunch our sourpusses (Longsight and Max excepted). It seems pretty clear to me that there are doubts about Pilkington's fitness. Gutierrez is a player CH knows well, who knows CH well and played in his Championship winning side, has been capped 22 times for Argentina, including in a World Cup. He is said to be a great guy to have in the dressing room, and according to Newcastle fans can be relied upon to give his all.

Regarding the inference that Chris Hughton is not about to be sacked, welcome to the real world. I recommend trying to stay in it. <ok>

Has anyone said we will make only one signing this window? And actually, it might well improve service to Hooper in particular.<ok>

I'm not enamoured by his skill as a player, but lots of people have been calling for an old head, someone who really leads. It's unlikely that we would be able to get someone like that who was also at the top of his game - see Elmander. Maybe Gutierrez fits that bill?

    Equally, have we signed him?

I watched him in the warm-up at CR last season and he seemed to gel well with the other Toon players and looked like the kind of "charachter" that maybe we have missed this season following Holty's departure. On the pitch we do seem to lack a leader or someone who will grit their teeth and say "c'mon lads" and inspire the team. Neither captains (Rusty or Bassong) seem to have that motivational pitch in them and maybe someone like Jonas might just be the guy to lift the team.

Not short on skill from what I've seen but lacks pace (bit like Snoddy). I think his experience and nous could be useful in the battle ahead and he will provide more competition for Pilks who may not last the season without breaking down again.

More consternation. According to transfermkt, he is right footed. Good heavens, could he actually be practised in the right type of flank play? <ok>

He is right footed, but he's predominantly a left winger who cuts inside.

I'll be honest, I find this signing totally underwhelming. Really hope he proves me wrong. And for the record I think £3m is a rip off, newcastle are laughing their way to the bank, unless they are picking up some of his wages.

What the feck are people expecting? Pirlo is not going to walk through the door.

One of the big issues for me is that the system that CH is trying to play relies on a good understanding between players and it is not happening (for a multitude of reasons). However, it is clear that some player combinations work better than others and it may be (given that CH knows him) that this fella will work well with Olsson, which if so will mean Olsson will make more movement and offer options, this is turn creates more space in center of midfield allowing the centre midfielders that little bit more time to play the forwards, there have been examples of this during the course of the season. Again I'm just trying to see the possibilties, rather than just adopting a sneering approach to everything that happens at Carrow Road at the moment
