I watched MotD last night and IMO the results of both games were largely influenced by mistakes by the match officials and both favoured the 'big team'!!! Newcastle V Citeh. I saw nothing wrong with the Newcastle goal and initially, nor did the linesman on that side. Stoke V Liverpool. Sterling clearly handled the ball, which again should have been seen by the the linesman on that side and NO WAY should Liverpool have been awarded a penalty!!!!
didn't see the liverpool goal, but the newcastle one should definately been disallowed, if the player was standing obscuring Harts vision of the shot he is interferring (sic) with the play, so was offside. The linesman couldn't give it because he couldn't tell if he was in the line of vision.
If you watch MotD, there were Citeh players blocking Hart's view, but the Newcastle player wasn't - they showed it from different angles and it proved he wasn't.
didn't see MOTD JR, something like this i think where it is unfair on refs showing all these different angles. Refs need to be given a break on these sort of decisions, because they just happen so quick its very hard on them. did they show an angle on how the ref would have seen it? re the current offside law, I'm an old fashioned kind of guy and as far as i'm concerned if you are on the pitch then its offside, sod all this first phase/second phase load of cobblers.
Fair comment Guru - if I remember rightly, the ref was to the side of play and didn't initially blow for the goal, but went over to consult his assistant, who then gave the offside.
Newcastle non-goal: I looked at the disallowed goal in slow mo and the Newcastle player is in direct line of the ball flight and has to squirm out of the way - it might even have flicked him but I'm not saying it did. Certainly interfering in my book and would have been in Hart's peripheral vision and potential direction of dive. So I think it was the right decision, which is a shame seeing as it was a cracking shot and I'm not sure Hart would have moved anyway, even without the Newcastle player being there, never mind saved it! Having said that, we've all seen goals like that given. Perhaps it was the immediate appeal by Hart & two others that gave the ref a decision to make. For me, being married to a rabid Geordie, it made for an interesting Sunday evening! Liverpool pen: Unintentional handball in the first place when blocking a clearance so shouldn't have got as far as the penalty area. Then, a clever convincing fall by Tinkerbell, I mean Stirling, after a slight nudge by the defender (who didn't get the ball) that would have done Ashley Young proud. Very soft pen, sometimes given but most often not - have to take ref's call on that one as well but we'd be raging if it was against us.
Yeah, he had an opinion on most things football related, one of the greats! http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/bill-shankly-in-quotes
I thought Mike Jones had a very poor game although he did get the Offside decision right and disallowed the goal. Cabaye should have been given 2 yellows and the player who assaulted Nasri sjould have got a straight Red as it was a disgusting challenge that has resulted in a serious injury! Unfortunately no further action can be taken against the player as he was cautioned by the referee at the time!
It may well be Dave but the big problem is that it will be seen to undermine the Referee's authority!
But they'll cover that by saying all the various cameras provide a much better view than the one the ref had!
No they need to be given help, as you say we have the camera angle, for both incidents yesterday there was a break in play afterwards easily enough time for the Ref to consult a TMO type figure and could have been given the actual answer, instead he went over to talk to the linesman for the Newcastle goal and two people who saw I once from a fair distance away tried to develop an opinion. It is utterly ridiculous, bare in mind how close the league is at the moment a dodgy penalty call could be the difference between relegation and safety, or making the top 4, the rewards for which are both tens of millions of pounds. Every other sport I can think of uses the technology available to them apart from football and it hasn't destroyed them.
Under current rules Newcastles goal should of stood, but as an ex goalkeeper how can a player standing 6 yards out not be interfering with play? Of course they are! You have to be aware of where they are and alert to the ball deflecting off them.
I would say they need either to be given help of the TV or all these angles need to stopped being shown to the general public. you can't have both because its making the refs job a nightmare. I would like to have the refs be able to use technology in this case, like you say there was a break in play, whats the difference to him going to the linesman than talking to the 4th official to clarify by the use of TV.
