I appreciate that, but that's the sort of thing, some people advocating technology would like to see as part of it.
Maybe if Gouffran had got his a*** back a bit quicker it wouldn't have come to that.
He did exactly the same in the second half from another Tiote shot.

The way I see it, some you win, some you lose.

It's time to start punishing the referees in a similar way we punish violent players retrospectively.

For big game changing decisions the clubs can lodge an anonymous formal challenge of an incident.
This can be rejected out of hand if trivial and frivolous, at which point it can be made public.

OR if the panel finds in favour of the referee the club is fined perhaps for wasting everyone's time.

If accepted it is reviewed retrospectively by a panel of former referees until a unanimous decision is reached.
If the final verdict goes against the referees action they get a demotion or 'ban' as it were BUT...

Most importantly they must offer a formal statement explaining why the original decision was made, what SHOULD have been done in retrospect (in agreement with the panel) and apologise.

I tell you what with the prospect of publicly saying sorry hanging above these lot it would nip it in the bud almost instantly!

Pay them better if you gave to, but stop protecting them and start holding them to task for these costly errors.

Isn't it against the rules of not606 to agree with each other?

Oh no, do we independently retrospectively reviewed for that?

I might get demoted for a few weeks to a Championship board... :emoticon-0100-smile

Oh god, yeah, well I almost put 'Sunderland board' and thought better of it!

Tell you what I'll just lodge an appeal in the name of common sense and hopefully dodge the Gus bus...

But some good points made and I think the crucial thing is finding a system that doesn't hang referees out to dry at every opportunity but as you say encourage them to make better decisions.
I also think it would give them a chance to alleviate some of the ill feeling that DOES carry over with supporters. Explain, apologise and we move on!

Absolutely. If all we do is make their job harder then less will want to do it and we'll get a lower and lower standard of ref. I do get a bit defensive of refs as my dad was one, so sometimes I bite when people are only being naturally disappointed, but then again sometimes their decisions are impossible to defend. Like you say though, we dust ourselves down and move on.

Correct, it's easy in the heat of the moment to forget the hellishly tough job it is out there. We don't want to discourage referees coming into the game at all, and perhaps there should be more done to highlight good refereeing also – which could be part of the process.

Hold up the great stuff they do in terms of accuracy etc and use the best of them as a barometer for the others to follow, that's vital too.

I wouldn't necessarily want to be a Premier League referee frankly so I'm just as for us rewarding these guys in parity with players if it makes them better, and tempts better people in to the profession.

Have to agree with you that Sunderland have had a lot more Man City decisions than Newcastle this season but believe me you will get used to it when your lucky streak ends

I share your pain.
On Saturday my team 'conceded' a goal after the ball passed through a striker's legs. This chap was about two yards offside and standing directly in front of our keeper - thus obstructing the view if nothing else. This was a carbon copy of a similar incident against us a little while ago - yet in both situations the officials deemed that was NO interference...... You cannot legislate for crass stupidity.

Yes - being a referee can be a difficult job. But my complaints are directed to the occasions when a decision is so obviously wrong - that is probably a complaint shared by most football fans - I find it difficult that such a wrong decision has been made.

As for pay parity with footballers - no ! A lot of referees already think that the match is all about THEM ! - as it is I can't believe that a footballer is worth £10K+ a week - let alone many times more this figure - but then I suppose it's not their fault if the club is willing to pay those amounts - ultimately it is the fans who pay in some form or another - I'm buggered if I want to pay any more just so that the money can be given to the referee - I don't go to matches to watch the antics of the officials.
